Midwife called saying my iron levels are a bit low. She said to take spatone - double the amount stated on the box so instead of 2 taking 4 sachets a day... does this sound right?

I'd be surprised if you'd get enough iron from spatone to up your levels, do you know what your levels are?

I took ferrous sulphate tablets - you can get them ooc but I'd check with a gp first

I will try but not sure the results have been sent through yet... so hard to get hold of a GP!

Thanks everyone! I will try to speak to the midwife again and see what she suggests.

Iron is 107 so above 105 cut off for anaemia so midwife says ok. Think I'll try the spatone for a few days and see! Thanks for all the advice

Mine was borderline with my second but my midwife says she hates giving out iron tablets as it can cause upset tummy. So she asked me to up the iron rich foods in my diet. More leafy greens and red meats. When I boiled any veg keep the veg water to make gravy or soups. Have vitamin C so things like orange juice with iron rich food a to help absorption and avoid dairy with it so the calcium doesn’t block absorption. Had my levels checked after 2 weeks of doing that and they had risen loads.

Midwife here. I don't know why people recommend Spatone! Your best bet for increasing your levels and bring gentle on your stomach is iron bisglycinate (also sometimes called gentle iron). It is what we recommend at my clinic and it is very effective.

I was low iron, but not anaemic, with DC1 and I took 2 sachets of spatone a day and it helped massively. A friend takes hardcore iron tablets but once her levels are up, Spatone helps maintain.

With DC2, I didn't take the spatone, become properly anaemic and had to have the pills.

Personally, I'd go with the spatone or other similar product for a week or so and see how you get on. if it's not enough, you'll continue to feel weak and tired etc and may have to go the more hardcore route.

@renthead as someone continuously prescribed ferrous fumerate, I’m surprised to read that iron bisglycinate has higher bioavailability, I will be ordering some -thanks for the tip!

ferrous bisglycinate, has been demonstrated to have at least two-fold higher bioavailability and absorption compared to conventional iron salts, including ferrous sulfate and ferrous fumarate

Thanks @renthead that sounds great!

I took 2 spatone sachets per day after my 12 week bloods showed anaemia, I think I was told to start iron supplements at my 16 week check up as this is when we are told blood results. At my 26 week bloods, my iron had shot up from under the level it should be to mid range normal.

I've tried different iron tablets in the past and they always upset my stomach, but I didn't have any digestive issues with spatone
