Blocked Eustachian tube

Hi there I’m wondering if anyone can shed any light on the matter.
At 30 weeks pregnant I started with a cold, which progressed to a cough.
I waited it out but then I noticed at around 34 weeks my ear was starting to crack, so I went to the doctors who wouldn’t give me anything to help fight this cold and cough as I was pregnant. The week after I lost hearing in my ear so I went back to the doctors who told me it was an ear infection and sent me away with a spray. i didn’t think it was an ear infection as there was no pain and I didn’t have a temp etc. so I went back to the docs who said it was a blocked Eustachian tube (I still have this cold and cough) and there wasn’t really anything they could do I would just have to let it sort itself out on its own but gave me a steroid nose spray to try (nasofan) I’m now 38 weeks pregnant and I still cannot hear properly, it sometimes makes me feel dizzy and it’s really stressing me out to the point of having panic attacks. I’ve tried steam inhilation, trying to pop my ear by holding my nose and blowing, gargling salt water, massages, antihistamine, humidifier. Nothing seems to be working. Has anyone else had this, if so how long did it take to clear?
does anyone have any tips on how I can get my hearing back - I can cope with the cold and the cough but not hearing is really stressing me out. Especially as I’m so close to my due date now

Took me 6-8 weeks I’m afraid. I had the spray, but I’m not sure it made any difference, I felt it went in its own time.

I have literally just experienced the same and nothing helped but time, mine cleared after 4 weeks of no hearing. Sorry I can’t give any helpful advice and I know how frustrating it is but just hang in there

I get eustachian tube problems every pregnancy, same nasal spray. Only goes away for me with the birth!

Singleandproud · 19/06/2023 21:36

I had a weird thing in pregnancy that from the day of my 12 week scan to the day DD was born everytime I walked outside my ears would pop like being on an aeroplane. Dr said it was also a blocked eustachian tube and that it was to do with balance being off due to pregnancy.

I had this - it was so annoying and stressful! It went a few weeks after birth. I found I could unblock one ear if I had a long hot shower and then pinched my nose and blew - might be worth a try? My other ear was very stubborn and nothing seemed to touch it.

Otovent ear balloons might help. They didn’t work for me, but the GP was very insistent that they usually help

BigBundleOfFluff · 19/06/2023 21:59

My daughter has issues with ear pressure and uses an otovent ear balloon. She thinks it helps a bit? I tried it and quite liked it!

Not pregnancy but I lost my hearing after a flight. I had long term sinusitis at the time. I spent £££ on natural remedies and acupuncture but the only thing that worked was this…

Pricey £100 + but worked

I had the exact same thing from about 30 weeks pregnant and unfortunately it didn’t clear until after I gave birth. It’s completely normal now though 3 months after birth

Jessiieebrook · 20/06/2023 14:46

Was it long after the birth?! I’m worried I’m not even going to be able to hear my baby cry

@Jessiieebrook hello, intrigued to know if this cleared for you? I have the exact same issue after covid and currently 41 weeks pregnant. Thank you.

Kessie14 · 05/12/2023 16:30

@Jessiieebrook did this ever go?
I'm in the exact same situation this week.
feeling very very down with it.

Thanks.

Hey! So I couldn’t actually take it much longer and I was reading online that you could buy like an ear popper on the Internet for like £100. Which I refuse to spend that much money on. So I bought a blow up pump and cut the end off the nozzle and used that. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing, but it worked. Put it up my nostril, covered the other one and kept swallowing and seemed to clear the blockage. Had to do this a couple of times a day and it gradually became less and less and just cleared up!

So sorry, I never got a notification for your comment! Hope it has cleared up? If not I have wrote what I did in a thread below!

@Jessiieebrook £100 is insane!
so glad something worked for you!

going to try the balloon out tomorrow!

Jessiieebrook · 05/12/2023 17:33

Yeah give it ago, I’d seen mixed reviews on the balloon and stuff like that kept making me go really light headed which wasn’t good whilst pregnant but if it doesn’t work I honestly recommend getting a blow up pump from Amazon, real cheap and worked for me 🤷🏽‍♀️
