Had my 36+1 scan today and baby is measuring 5lb 11oz how accurate are these scans we are trying to avoid a 9lb baby as had problems with my last who was 9lb 11oz I’m going back to check weight again at 38 weeks are they more likely to be bigger or smaller than the estimated weight

I found it varies on fluid levels tbh, but you can't do anything if your baby is going to be big, it isn't something you can avoid. You need to talk to your team about what happened last time and how to avoid that again

Disneybaby12 · 19/06/2023 18:11

Not really what I was asking I’m having a section if she has increased by too much at next scan if not going to be induction

Hi OP, I can only give my experience but it was quite accurate for me even though they couldn’t measure the head as DS was engaged. I think it can really vary - the fundal height measurement at 36 weeks had me at the 50th percentile which was quite an increase from 2 weeks before so I was sent for a growth scan which showed me around the 30th percentile.
DS was born around the 25th percentile.
It can be totally out for some people though!

LittleAlishas · 19/06/2023 18:58

My son measured 5 lbs 1 oz at 34 weeks - he was born a few days later (!) weighing 4 lbs 13 oz, so it was accurate in my case. Fingers crossed things go well for you OP ☺️

Disneybaby12 · 19/06/2023 19:02

Forgot to say she was 4lb 1oz at 32 weeks and is still following the same line on the graph hopefully she won’t be too much bigger in 2 weeks time

Both of mine came out quite a bit smaller than growth scans had suggested they’d be.

AfingeroffudgeisNOTenough · 19/06/2023 19:14

Way out for me. Had growth scans at 34&36 weeks with DC1 and was told at 36wks baby would be very lucky to hit 6lb. (Can’t remember the exact weight - it was a long time ago) Went out and bought a load of early baby clothes in preparation. Baby was born at 39 weeks at 7lb,6oz - still small and actually wore tiny baby clothes for about a month, but all the early baby stuff had to go back.

NoIncomeTaxNoVAT · 19/06/2023 19:19

Mine was quite accurate. I had a scan at 37w where she was predicted 5lbs 6oz i think, where i agreed to induction at 39w as she had dropped below the 9th centile. But then she was born spontaneously 38w weighing 5lbs 12oz.

Disneybaby12 · 19/06/2023 20:16

Thank you so not to far out this is my fourth baby first was 5lb 13 second 8lb 5 and third was 9lb 11 so all very different they said this baby is looking like she is following the trend on my first baby my biggest baby has problems due to getting stuck so trying to avoid that happening again

allgoodthings84 · 19/06/2023 20:38

Mine wasn’t accurate. Growth scan predicted she would be 7lb 11oz at 40 weeks but she was 6lb 12oz at 41+1 weeks

tinyshoppingbasket · 19/06/2023 21:56

Mine wasn't accurate either, estimated 5lbs 3oz at 36 weeks and born at 40 weeks 6lbs 2oz.

Worth remembering they are just using a few measurements to predict an overall weight, so if for example your baby has super long legs, it's going to throw out the prediction somewhat!

Nelbert19 · 19/06/2023 22:36

For the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy, I was attending for weekly scans because they were measuring my baby as enormous and were talking about inducing me if he got much bigger. I thought I was going to give birth to a toddler!

anyway, he was born following spontaneous labour at 37+2 weeks, weighing 6lbs1oz - tall and skinny like a scarecrow 🙄

Salamander91 · 19/06/2023 22:55

My consultant refuses to do weight estimates because they aren't that accurate and just cause panic.

Littlelighthouse · 20/06/2023 09:43

My DD was predicted to be way over 9lb, she was 8lb 6oz.

Disneybaby12 · 20/06/2023 13:11

i know it’s only an estimate but does give you a good idea of what to expect so is helpful thanks

Hi, i can only share my experience.
I had gestational diabetes and baby was estimated to be around 8lbs on my final scan, i was induced at 38+1 due to reduced movements, baby was born we 38+2 weighing 5lbs..
The measurements were really off for me.

Wishing you loads of luck! x

BigPeople · 20/06/2023 13:17

My growth s and were a fiction!

DC1 estimated at 8 & half pounds and was over 10lbs.

DC2 estimated at 9 lbs and was 7lbs!

tb4122 · 20/06/2023 13:18

My boy was estimated 7lb 1oz on a scan at 36 weeks, was born 40+6 weighing 8lbs 15oz so it was probably fairly accurate for us.

njh21 · 20/06/2023 13:34

I was told 8lb 4oz at 34 weeks and born 39 weeks at 8lb 6oz xx

BackOfTheMum5net · 20/06/2023 19:53

They're accurate 70% of the time to within 20%.

So not very accurate.

Proudmummy67 · 20/06/2023 23:58

I was told baby was 9lb at 38 weeks and he was born at 38 weeks weighing 8lb 13oz so quite accurate!

Blue2020 · 21/06/2023 04:59

I think mine was accurate, I don’t remember the exact numbers but I remember the ballpark numbers.
