We are moving to Scotland around when I’ll be 7 months and I’m wondering where to give birth. We will be in Lanarkshire and I’ve done some research into both Edinburgh and Glasgow but as I’m not there and have no connections im looking for some advice!

I will be having a section - can you share with me your experiences of elcs in Edinburgh or Glasgow?

If you will be living in Lanarkshire why don’t you have your baby in Lanarkshire ?

You would normally go to your local maternity hospital. Glasgow and Edinburgh are different health authorities so you’ll need to look into that x

I can help with Edinburgh - I actually work in obstetrics in that hospital and had a c section myself thee on the 1st of this month (and the 9th of March last year). Like everywhere in the NHS, staff shortages are rife, but it didn't affect my care in the slightest when I was in for 8 days (baby decided to be awkward and drop her blood sugars to 1.1 so was in the unit for a while). I can honestly say I was cared for to impeccable standards, again despite staff shortages.

... cut myself off early.

Lanarkshire has its own labour ward and theatres, so unless there's a contraindication (like if you are severely high risk and need to be in a specialist unit like ours, or baby needs our neonatal specalist unit) for delivery outwith you'd deliver there in that trust.

not sure why I hadn’t looked into that but as I’m so far away I’ve been a bit lost looking for info online (face palm!) I’ll do some research x

It would be quite weird to try to get transferred to a different trust for birth I think? You just need to register with the midwives closest to your new house (self refer online or ask gp surgery) and they'll tell you what your options are.
Unless you have really serious complications, I don't think it'll be necessary for you to go to Glasgow/Edinburgh.

Thank you, this really puts my mind at ease. I just looked at Edinburgh I think because I felt a bigger hospital would be better? Not sure really but as I’m not moving until quite late in my pregnancy I won’t get a chance to speak to a consultant or midwife there for a while so I’m doing this all blind. Really great to hear you had s good experience, I’m still early but getting really nervous now!

Hi,

Hope your delivery went well and you have a lovely baby!

I've just come across this post whilst looking for information on how to move maternity services from England to Scotland, I'll be moving to Edinburgh from England at about 22 weeks.

If you are happy to share, did you find the move of care went well? Is it just a question of contacting local GP and maternity services to move the care plans?

Thought I'd ask since the post came up on a search!

Hello,
Hope your pregnancy and delivery went well.
My wife has relocated to England for her job but she'll be back to Scotland to deliver her baby when she is about 7.5 month into her pregnancy.
I'd appreciate if you could share any experience in your move.
Thanks
