Bi-Cornuate Uterus

Hi

I've got a bi-cornuate uterus and was wondering if anyone experienced this? I am 12 weeks and the baby is growing in the larger part of my uterus, which is a good thing. My mum had the same thing, and I unfortunately grew in the small part (was only 1 lb) and am tiny so am slightly concerned. The the fact I've got this far is amazing! I am expecting to have a prem baby and am prepared for that, but just wondering if people had experience. I'm under 2 consultants, one thinks I might need a stitch, the other doesn't, and don't know what to do (they are in 2 different hospitals)

I know about this!

Firstly congratulations on your pregnancy.

I've got a bicornuate uterus too. I was diagnosed after a couple of miscarriages. I was admitted for a D and C and the operating surgeon punctured my uterus trying to do the procedure. I essentially have two identically sized uterus (uteri?)

I've got three children and I've had five early miscarriages (around 8 weeks.) The boys were all delivered by elective section at 38 (DS1) 37 (DS2) and 35 (DS3) weeks. DS1 was the smallest at 4lb 10oz. DS2 the largest at 6lb 14 oz. All babies lay transverse from about 28 weeks.

With DS1 the placenta lay on the septum between the uterine tubes and hence had a poor blood supply. He was monitored for IUGR from 28 weeks and delivered slightly early when he was clearly starting to struggle. He is slightly small for his age and has some other mild problems but we don't know if this is to do with the IUGR or just to do with him. The other two are absolutely fine, DS2 spent a short time in SCBU after brith because he couldn't clear his lungs, this was more to do with the birth than the bicornuate uterus.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I have a bicornuate uterus as well and am pregnant with my second. First dd was four weeks early but a good weight, had a c-section as she was breech. This one's due in May but I'm measuring very big, possibly because of the position of baby in uterus, have a growth scan on Fri.
Not sure about a stitch, wasn't offered that.

I know two people with bicornuate uteruses (or should that be uteri?!!) Both have conceived and delivered two healthy children and not miscarried at all as far as I know. One of them had to have c-sections but I think this was more to do with the opening to her uterus than the fact it was bicornuate.

Wish you all the best!

I've never been formally diagnosed with this, but during the 12 week scan with number 3 (due in 2 weeks) they suspected something like the bicornate what not. But they never made a big deal of it (it wasn't picked up with the other 2, I think because I wasn't offered 12 week scans with them, and once you get to 20 weeks, everything stretched out so probably not so obvious).

Anyway, no idea obviously at moment what number 3 will be like, but the other two went overdue and weighed in at 8lb and 9lb10oz. Both born naturally. Midwives always suspected they would be small -

Good luck, hopefully the consultants will agree on the best course of action.

Have got a positive story for you!

I have got a bicornuate uterus, diagnosed when I got pregnant with a coil (it was in the slightly smaller half). Had a very traumatic pregnancy, they were worried about the coils position, they gave me steroids at 24 weeks thinking I would go into labour soon, then growth scans thinking the babies size would be compromised etc etc. Needless to say I still hadn't gone into labour at 41 weeks and ended up being induced then having a section as ds was 10 lbs! Also had ds2 by c section (10 lbs 5!) and am pregnant again and am not expecting a small baby!

that is all very encouraging. I know that there are positive stories, as I too am living proof of this! I think I'm just scared that my baby will be just like me (very small, v early and spend alot of time in hospital).

But I also know that medicine has improved dramatically since I was born (33 yrs ago) and I'll be in good hands. I did have a mmc in June last year but I don't think that had anything to do with my bi-cornuate uterus tbh.

I just keep thinking - wow it's amazing I've got this far (mmc at 7 weeks, discovered at 12). In a way I hope the baby's not too big as I'm tiny!! we'll wait and see
