Vbac after c-section

Anyone on here had a vbac after a C-section.
How was it? Do you wish you went down the c-section route again or were you glad you tried natural?

I have chosen to have an elective section, but i believe your chance of a successful vbac can partly depend on why you had to have a previous section. If it was in any way due to ‘failure to progress’ or dilate fully, you may have a lower chance. If it was for other reasons, you may have a higher chance.

I did! I had an emergency c section with my first and a VBAC with my second. Was pleased I did.
Any questions just ask and I'll try and remember.

First labour awful, really overdue, induced, epidural, failed to progress beyond 6-7cm dilated then finally emergency csection with baby in neonatal and me in hospital for a week altogether.

Second labour a dream. VBAC and all over within 3 hours start to finish, just on gas and air. Some stitches after but nothing in comparison to the csection healing. Home the same day.

I'd recommend going for it if you're considering it but don't set your heart on anything as you know it doesn't always go to plan.

I had cs for failure to progress (2 days ish and got to 7cm, her head was stuck at a funny angle in my pelvis)

Second time round I wanted a straightforward vb or cs, wasn't that pleased about having to be on a delivery unit without the nice lights etc of a midwife unit. But when I got there it was fine, 3 hours and he was out.

The vb was painful but overall I preferred it to cs. I loved being ok straight away, able to get up and shower etc.

Thanks for the replies. My C-section was too do with babies cord so I don't think I'm classes as high risk this time round.
My main reason for considering a VBAC was so I can hopefully have a quicker recovery and so I can hold my toddler as much as the baby. I really don't want her to feel neglected especially when a new babies just arrived

@Tooglamtogiveadamn2 thank you. I'm really stuck with what to do I'm still 4 months pregnant so still got time to decide if all goes well.
I just change my mind most days.
The only thing putting me off C-section is not being able to hold my toddler straight away I really don't want her to feel neglected after a new babies arrived.
Also how was your labour I didn't dilated or have any labour with my emergency C-section.
Also with the vbac did the baby come earlier than due date or later?

Labour started naturally with both of mine rather than induced. All was going well till they were concerned about my firsts heart rate/cord wrapped round then had the emerg c section.
My second was overdue and I had a date in for a caesarean if he hadn't have arrived. I really wanted a shorter recovery too already having a 4 year old at home and I'm so glad I did. X

Check out The VBAC Link podcast, I find the first 5-10 minutes unbearable with how they introduce their podcast but its filled with lots of interesting information.

Here's a good peer reviewed article on the indicators for success on VBAC https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7233729/

I'll be hoping to get my VBA2C, DS1 was a vaginal birth and my 2 EMCS were due to non repeating factors, also will be 4 years since my last CS so all positive indicators for me.

Definitely read around it and the stats are super interesting too.

VBAC: antenatal predictors of success

To determine antenatal factors that may predict successful vaginal birth after Caesarean section (VBAC), to develop a relevant antenatal scoring system and a nomogram for prediction of vaginal birth after caesarean delivery. A non recurring indication...

I had emergency c section with my second and really hoping for a vbac this time with my third. I found recovery really tough with the section, my partner had to take longer paternity because I just couldn't manage the baby and toddler on my own. I know people who have had c sections and just seem to bounce back straight away but I struggled.

massistar · 21/06/2023 12:06

I had a VBAC after an emergency section for undiagnosed breech. Recovery and breastfeeding etc were much easier after the VBAC.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 22/06/2023 08:57

I was booked for an elective but baby came early and in hindsight the hospital kept stalling me so I ended up with a vbac.
Section for failure to progress first time, very easy recovery. Birth notes said I have a narrow pelvis. First baby was 7lb 6 and one week early; and second was 6lbs 7 and 3 weeks early.

VBAC ended with forceps delivery, lots of stitches and 16 weeks before I could walk or sit down normally. Huge internal bruising and swelling.
So I wish I'd put my foot down but was getting lots of positive encouragement and fell for it. I had felt such a failure after the first section.

So unhelpfully it's a bit of a crapshoot. We've all had different experiences. With your toddler, if you are breastfeeding you will be in one place almost constantly irrespective of section or not. It's a nice opportunity to do cuddles, watch too much Hey Duggee and explain that the baby is eating and not getting preferential cuddles. Because that's what constant feeding looks like to a toddler as I learned.
