Hello

Looking for some advice,
I am currently 32 weeks pregnant. Unfortunately last august when trying to conceive I had a genital herpes out break. I never knew I had herpes and it was my first outbreak. Since then nothing until now at 32 weeks pregnant. At present it's a very minor outbreak and a lot less painful than my initial outbreak last august.
I'm worried about passing onto baby. I told my midwife in my initial appointment I had previously had herpes. She said I could take medication from 35 weeks pregnant.

Does anyone have any advice, is it safe to just let this outbreak pass?

The only worry with Herpes is if the baby touches a wound during the birthing process.

If the outbreak is still active when you do eventually go into labour, which it shouldn't be if the medication works, you should have a C-Section to remove that risk.

For now though, nope, don't worry, just take the meds.

@ToBeOrNotToBee
Thank you, am I ok to start the meds from 35 weeks which is when midwife last said in a standard check up that they would be offered
(I'm currently 32 weeks)

You'd have to confirm this with the midwife.

I'm sure they're perfectly safe for pregnancy.

I had this convo with the obstetrician and she was very firm that you should treat outbreaks in pregnancy

they’ll also give prophylaxis from 36 weeks I think so take tabs every day until birth. They said if you’ve had previously before pregnancy then the chance of passing to baby is less than 1%

Hi
I had a few outbreaks about 5/6 years ago and I was pregnant with my first (she's now 18 months) I took the tablets from around week 35 and everything was okay with her and me. I think it's a lot worse if you have an outbreak while giving birth, it can be very bad for the baby.

I took anciclovir from 36 weeks three times a day, I didn't have any outbreaks in pregnancy although I thought I had just before induction, but was examined and all fine. That was my second pregnancy, first one no preventative measures, was just advised I'd be checked when I went into labour, but knew I was ok and told the midwife that. They said If I had a flare up when I went into labour I'd have to have an emergency c section.
