I had obstetric cholestasis in my first pregnancy and I was induced at 37 weeks. Fast forward 7 years later and I'm 20 weeks pregnant and I'm severely itchy. It's unbearable. I had pale bowel movements last week which is also a symptom. I feel rubbish and I'm not sleeping great. I have had 2 miscarriages prior to this pregnancy and I know there is a risk of stillbirth with obstetrics cholestasis. Should I wait until Monday for advice, or should I ring the hospital now? I'm worried they will think I'm overreacting. I'm think I'm also worried that something will go wrong with this pregnancy. Can anyone advise please. Thank you.

As ever with these types of posts I think it’s always better to ring than not ring, just in case anything was the matter and you’d forever kick yourself for not ringing. Chances are they’ll want to see you if they think there’s any risk to either of you. Hope everything’s okay

Ring the hospital now, you won’t rest until

Ring now. You have a genuine concern, no one will think you're wasting their time.

Please call them ASAP x

Ring now, always better to ring because it doesn't take long to call but could make all the difference. Good luck

TokyoSushi · 17/06/2023 20:24

100% ring. No one will think you’re time wasting or overreacting with your symptoms and history. Hope everything’s ok 💐

Give them a ring, they'll want to check your levels I'd imagine so you can be medicated if they are high.

Sorry you're going through this, it really is miserable, can't compare the itching to anything else, and the worry. Fingers crossed your levels are low.

OP, I had this situation last year after having it in my first pregnancy - deffo ring!

Even if your bloods are ok at this point, it's worth asking for them to be monitored fairly regularly as my bloods were fine despite me being itchy from around 15 weeks but still went dodgy at the end resulting in induction (and medication for the last few weeks of pregnancy).

Hope you get seen promptly. x

Thank you everyone, my bile acid and liver function test are within normal range. I'm still unbearably itchy so she has prescribed piriton. She seemed quite dismissive but it feel identical to when I had this itching last time with Cholestasis. She said she would repeat my bloods in 7-10 days which is a comfort as I know the itch can precede the elevated bile acids and LFT. Hopefully its just hormonal and it subsides. Thank you all so much for encouraging me to go to the hospital! X

Just seen this post but wanted to say I'm so glad you went and got checked over. Healthcare staff often seem dismissive, some seem to forget the need for a bedside manner, but the important thing is you were checked over and you're having the bloods repeated soon. A friend of mine had obstetric cholestasis so I know it's important to have it monitored.
Best of luck with the next round of bloods and hope the itching subsides.
Well done on getting checked over and I hope everything goes well for this pregnancy.
