Sick leave following ovarian torsion

Hello! I feel I may be over thinking this but last wednesday I had to have an emergency laparoscopy due to ovarian torsion. Worst pain I have ever felt!!!! I am also nearly 18 weeks pregnant so the registrar was reluctant to do the surgery however had no choice- the surgery although only keyhole took around 3 hours as they had to be so careful with the womb etc. The incisions are a lot higher up than normal apparently.

Luckily me and baby are doing well- recovery is going okay and ive had one week off work. Am i unreasonable to take next week off work too? I still have stitches and bending can be an issue.
My jobs isnt that physical but does involve some lifting and also getting down on the floor a lot.

Also, are you allowed to leave the house when on sick leave following an op? I have been to asda and have an irrational fear that ill be spotted 😂😂
Xx

Bloody hell OP. Stay off as long as you need. I would’ve thought two weeks at very bare minimum. You poor thing. And yes you can leave the house.

@Chip131 definitely get signed off for another week! I had 2 weeks off after having my appendix out (also keyhole) and needed every minute of it! you can absolutely leave the house! When you're on sick leave you can do everything at the pace your body needs (which isn't the case at work). I know little gentle walks can apparently help with recovery too and leaving the house helps for that haha.

Take it really easy. Hope you have a swift recovery x

Thanks both! I feel reassured xxx

If you don't feel well to work absolutely don't, you and baby are more important than any job.

However, are you being paid full pay rn while on sick leave? The qualifying period for calculating is 8 weeks previous to the 15th week before the baby is due so usually what you get paid when you are between 17 and and 25 weeks pregnant. So if you aren't getting full pay while on sick leave it might be better for you maternity pay to go in with reasonable adjustments (absolutely no lifting or bending). I've had a couple of friends be screwed over by being off in that crucial time.

My DD had ovarian torsion and lap salpingo oophorectomy and was off school for 6 weeks. Add in the pregnancy and I'd say at least 6 weeks off work especially as it's a physical job.

Oh yes, re Mat pay- don't screw yourself over 😬 go in but don't do anything (if possible!) I'd definitely speak to midwife/surgeon/occy health

Are you serious? Get yourself signed off for at least a few weeks.

I would definitely take more time off unless you could be on light duties at work (ideally sat down). I also had an ovarian torsion- agree the worst pain!! A lot for you to deal with whilst also pregnant, look after yourself🙏
