32week scan and baby measuring too small

I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar experience and what the outcome was.
I had a 32 week scan yesterday which was booked in due to a diagnosis of gestational diabetes. Baby was measuring at 2.7 Centile. I also mentioned that I have been experiencing reduced movements the past 24 hours however, baby doesn't have a regular pattern of movements just yet.
I was asked to go to triage to be monitored and baby was not distressed i then had to wait to see a doctor who couldn't tell me much about the scan results but told me that they picked up that I have a UTI and will likely need to be induced at 36-38 weeks.
I was due to see a consultant today at 2pm anyway to discuss the results of 32 week scan (due to the GD) and I have also been referred to another department (can't recall the name- maybe fetal medicine) who will contact me within 3 days and book me in for another scan and discuss the results in more detail.
Im just extremely worried and confused and hoping everything is fine with baby.

Has anyone experienced anything similar and what was the the outcome?

Thank you in advance

The same thing happened to me. Picked up as small on my 30 weeks scan. They kept an eye on her and she was induced at 35 weeks due to other complications. She weighed 4lb 10 when she was born and was a tiny tot but she made all her milestones and is now a fit and healthy 14 year old.

@elf81 thank you so much for responding and sharing your positive story. Im glad your baby was healthy and she's now a healthy teenager ❤️
I hope I get the same outcome.

How worrying for you!

Just so you know, growth scans are not always the most accurate of things. I had them because the doctors thought my son was small and even when I was in labour, the consultant who was up my bits, rooting around said baby was going to only be 5lbs. He was born at 7lbs 15oz at 38 weeks (spontaneous labour).

Same thing happened with me. Gestational diabetes can cause smaller babies ( a lot of people think it's just larger babies).
My baby was 5lb 7oz 15 days early. She's now nearly 4!

My dd is 2 months now, I had lots of scans due to low weight. I got tonsillitis at 36 weeks and my waters broke. Was induced and she was 5lbs 2. So had I gone to 40 weeks, she would probably have been about 7lbs. Which is normal for me. I know it's concerning but you are being monitored, try not to worry. Go in any time you think there may be reduced movements. Try to get as much rest as you can.

I did too, started off with a routine scan as my bump was small, she measured small so had more routine scans, turned out I had pre eclampsia. Was induced at 35 weeks, they thought she would be around 5lbs but came out 4lbs. Was your blood pressure ok? Xx

Hello!

I also had gestational diabetes so regular scans, baby was measuring big for the majority of the scans. Towards the end of my pregnancy babies growth started to slow and induction was mentioned- i was consultant led care due to surgery in pregnancy so was closely monitored.

Even though baby wasn’t measuring small, she was estimated to be on the 40th percentile she was born at 38 weeks weighing 5 pounds on the 2nd percentile. She was in perfect health and she is now 8 weeks old weighing 9.7lbs 🙂
She does need to have regular follow up appointments with the peads team for the first 6-12 months to make sure she is meeting the milestones needed and her growth is fine but other than that, no issues!

Like you, we didn’t have a pattern of movement and i spent most of my time in maternity assessment. I also had a really positive induction and birth, i know some people have bad experiences with induction but just know there are many positive ones, i was so scared to be induced!

I would try not to worry for the moment, they are keeping a close eye on you and baby.
For what it is worth, I was having growth scans in my first pregnancy due to low papp-a. Was told at 36 week growth scan that baby was likely to be around 7lb at birth. She was born 2 weeks later just short of 9lb. So they aren't always exactly right.

I had it happen in my last pregancy, check up scans suggested baby wasnt gaining weight/small from 32-36 weeks. So consultant decided to go for inducing labour at 38 weeks.

However, when my DD came out, she wasnt small or under weight at all. So i've lost my faith in accuracy of scans a little.

@essynemo can I ask why your daughter has required follow up with paeds? Was it due to low birth weight??
My daughter was 5lb 7oz at 38 weeks and my niece was 5lb 3oz never followed up with paeds

essynemo · 14/06/2023 14:02

@MoserRothOrangeandAlmond yeah it was because of her low birth weight, no other reason.
She had some bloods done at birth to rule out conditions which might have contributed to her weight and all were negative, she’s in perfect health but they still want regular check ins 🤷🏼‍♀️

To me she was just a tiny baby, but understand they might have their own regulations that they need to follow with small babies.

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 14/06/2023 21:03

@essynemo
Interesting. It must vary from trust to trust. She was diagnosed as an IUGR baby and they were happy as long as she was feeding well and gaining weight.
My niece was in SCBU for a week, no follow up needed.

@MoserRothOrangeandAlmond it is interesting, we have our first appointment next week so hopefully they discharge us when they see how well she is doing! 🤞🏻
