Anti sickness tablets...do they work?

So I'm only currently 6.5wks pregnant but for the past 4/5 days the nausea has been unreal, I feel soon rubbish! I had bad nausea with my other children but just got on with it but this time I don't think I can stand feeling so poorly and considering I'm only 6wks I've got a long time feeling like this yet too! Has anyone taken the anti sickness tablets? Do they actually work, I just want to feel better. I've got no energy at all either. I don't want to sound like a moaner as i am very blessed

Definitely speak to your gp or midwife. I insisted I get some tablets as I felt so horrendous. To be honest for a while I think they worked but it could have been placebo.

im now 11w 3d and I am sick most days. I don’t take the tablets anymore because putting them in my mouth to swallow makes me gag and vomit.

im sorry you’re feeling so poorly. It really is hard but some days are easier than others. Just keep eating and drinking. Some days I don’t feel it so much and I manage to distract myself. Others I burp so much and my head spins needing to be sick.

and to be fair, I feel the best right after vomiting as the nausea disappears for an hour or so.

im praying my sickness goes in a couple of weeks.

I tried two prescriptions and neither worked for me.

Cakeandslippers · 13/06/2023 08:09

It's varied but they helped me. I had to try 2 lots as the first ones didn't help. They weren't a miracle cure I still felt sick but nothing like as badly. I could drink liquids on them and eat some food and I was sick less. The nausea was worse than the sickness for me and they definitely helped.

Danikm151 · 13/06/2023 08:11

the hospital prescribed me cyclizine ( can’t remember the spelling) when I went for my 12 week scan as my sickness was so bad. I used them up till 19 weeks.

MrsH497 · 13/06/2023 08:21

I had 2 hypermesis pregnancies. Had anti sickness both times. Ondansetron was the only thing that worked for me

libraryquery · 13/06/2023 12:21

Yes they can work but you may need to try a few different ones to get some relief. See your GP and then keep going back if you find they're not helping. You may find that one works for a few days / weeks but then doesn't any more. Ask to try a different one.
Like PP, Ondansetron was the only one to work well for me.

Lwrenagain · 13/06/2023 13:25

You may need them IV before they'll stay down.

Try cyclizline first.
Then ondansetron & cyclizine.
Then prednisolone which will boost the effects of the cyclizine and ondansetron.
Also ask for omeprazole for the inevitable heartburn vomiting brings.

I was sick 100 times+ daily a few weeks ago but with this I'm managing to not die of dehydration, so it does work, it might just be you need the first dose IV so it can get into your system without you bringing it up immediately.

I'm on HG pregnancy 3 now and 27 weeks in, still puking but not anywhere near as badly. And it tends to be mornings I throw up now probably due to lack of meds overnight, but you absolutely can get meds to work. It just takes pissing about a bit for the right combo x

Thanks all for replying. Really appreciate it. Mine is more the constant feeling sick 24/7 it's horrendous! I've rang the docs and they've prescribed an anti sickness (not sure which 1) as haven't collected yet. I just hope they work because makes me feel so rubbish, no motivation and just so tired. This is my 4th baby so maybe having other children makes it extra hard work lol! Keep your fingers crossed that they work for me 🤞

Crossing everything!

JassyRadlett · 13/06/2023 15:41

The other point is that the sooner you start the more chance they'll have of working - and don't let your GP fob you off with 'it will pass soon/just a normal part of pregnancy/whatever other bollocks'

I had to get my midwife to call my GP. She was a very tiny woman but utterly outraged at how I was being treated/ignored.

TinyTeacher · 13/06/2023 16:17

I found that cyclizine made the sickness manageable. But it made me really sleepy. So it was a trade off. Either way I was pretty sofa bound for chunks of the day, but with the cyclizine I wasn't getting dehydrated as badly.

I know this thread is a few weeks old but any help would be much appreciated…

Currently 10 weeks 5 days (ish). Already been admitted to hospital twice for dehydration and placed on a drip. Almost certain I am heading for round 3.

First stint in hospital I was prescribed cyclizine. I was advised to take 1 initially see how I was (but could take up to 3 a day) as my blood pressure is extremely low and it can cause dizziness.

First time I took it was a work day. I took late morning. I barely even felt nauseous, ate really well. By the time it wore off, around 5ish I felt awful. Like extreme hangover - couldn’t look at a light, dizzy lying down. Then was violently sick all night. Decided to try again over the weekend and when I would not need to drive etc. Same again. Had another stint in hospital.

On Friday I knew I was extremely dehydrated. The medical advice given was to take another tablet. Which knocked me out for the whole day Saturday. Probably didn’t help I was already exhausted from lack of sleep 😴.

Yesterday I was prescribed Prochlorperazine. I have taken 1 this evening. They have to dissolve under top lip. All was fine for about 15-20 minutes until the taste of the tablet hit me. Now I have just spent the last 20 minutes hugging the toilet 🤢.

Beginning to think medication isn’t for me. Any tips?

LadyJ2023 · 04/07/2023 21:16

4 children and never worked I was vomiting right till the day I went into labour with all of them. I was so ill everytime hubby had to take time off work. No joke only went once they were born. They tried allsorts for me tablets, drip, patches and nothing worked

hlc123 · 04/07/2023 21:54

Ondansetron was the only thing that helped me

TTC53 · 05/07/2023 18:19

@BB2818 I was also on cyclizine for a while. I had the dizziness to start with but then I think my body got used to it. However it didn't stop my sickness, so like you I was prescribed Prochlorperazine.

I agree the taste is horrendous. When I got to the chemical taste part of it I would shove a couple of polo's in my mouth which helped for a other 40 mins or so. Then I'd have to wipe the remains out of my gum before being ill.

Neither meds actually worked for my sickness so I'm now on Xoneva which has been the most effective for me. I'm still being sick but so much less. Keep talking to the doctors to find the right medication for you

Lwrenagain · 05/07/2023 19:21

Cyclizine and Ondansetron with some Procloperizine to boost their efficiency, at 10 weeks I'd go in and get them on IV and try orally until you're able to manage without the IV.
Best of luck, HG is seriously the worst.

I'm due in 10 or so weeks and I'm still on that combo and this is 4th HG rodeo, that's been the only combo keeping me at home x

TeddyBeans · 05/07/2023 19:27

I had promethazine with DS and tried it with DD but found that it made my restless legs a million times worse so stopped pretty quickly!

BB2818 · 06/07/2023 17:07

Thank you everyone. I had HG with my DC but I must have coped better last time, I can’t remember struggling this much. Or maybe I have just forgotten how bad it really was 🤦🏼‍♀️

Think I will just ride it out 😬

Jazie543x · 06/07/2023 20:22

Hi guys, well I got put on cyclizine but did nothing other than make me so tired felt like a zombie so stopped those after a week, I'm now on metoclopramide and fingers crossed they seem to be working! Still get the odd day of dreaded nausea but most days I feel good and can actually eat and drink! (Not always what I want but what I fancy if that makes sense) 10wks today so I'm hoping only another few weeks and it will pass 😅
