C-section or vbac 2nd time round

I had an emergency c-sections with my DD in 2021. I'm now pregnant with my 2nd and have a consultation tomorrow about my options for this pregnancy. I'm only in the beginning of my 2nd trimester so still have some time to think but it plays on my mind everyday.

My pros to having another c-section is that I kind of know what will happen although I have heard it's a lot more relaxed. Also I'll know the date to be able to get childcare for my daughter. The cons is the long recovery and mainly the fact I wouldn't be able to pick DD up after and I don't want her to feel neglected especially after a new baby has come.
Also I hated them injections I had to have in my tummy after.

Vbac pro is hopefully a quicker recovery and I was quite excited about it with me first obviously it didn't happen that way which is fine but I did read up on HypnoBirthing. The cons is mainly the pain 😅 obviously there can be complication and I could end up with a section anyway.

So just wondering what other mums did who had a C-section with first child and what you choose to do with your next and why?

Sorry @Emhead93 , I dont have an answer to your question but following as in the same position as you after an emergency section for my son in 2020. Im leaning more towards a c-section at the moment, as at least I know what to expect and can plan accordingly.

I think chance of success for vbac is affected by the reason for the first section-- i.e if it was due to lack of progress then labor may be less likely to succeed second time around? I only dilated to 4cm last time and then baby went into distress and passed meconium so I am not sure of my chances this time around.

Following with interest and wishing you all the best with your decision and a happy and healthy pregnancy

Hey, I've been listening to The VBAC Link podcast which has been really insightful. Also, done some research of Google Scholar reading into stats.

As Janeykat says, the success rate is dependent on a number of things, one of which is why you had a C-Section 1st time round.

I would hear what they have to say about in your meeting as it’s different for everyone. I’m going for a planned c section as the consultant told me that it’s 50/50 that I’ll end up having another emergency c section anyway and I won’t be able to go completely naturally if I chose vbac anyway I’ll have to be induced early to be monitored from start to finish so with that in mind I went for a planned c section. The consultant said she wasn’t surprised I went for that option and I had my c section date through the post before I was 21 weeks. Hopefully the meeting will help you know more what you want to do.

The reason for my first C-section was due to DD having a true knot so for that reason the midwife said they shouldn't class me as high risk.
I'll see what they say tomorrow they may shed some light on it. Just so worried about making the wrong decision

I had 2nd elective Caesarian rather than vbac.
My first Caesarian was a last minute elective as at my 10days overdue scan they said he’s breach and very big do you want a c-section tomorrow?
It was such a lovely experience and I didn’t have any problems picking up the baby and the recovery was straightforward. I bounced back quickly. I was 38.

I had to really make my case for the second elective c-section as they wanted me to have vbac due to the c-section rate at the hospital. I told them that wasn’t an important consideration for me! My reasons were:
my positive 1st c/s
my fear of the possibility of having an emergency c/s which was quite likely and also a much bigger deal medically than a manned procedure
honestly too, I wanted the certainty of the date
I also wanted a sterilisation
I was 42

I was in hospital for 4 nights the first time and just 1 night second time. It was a harder recovery and I got my wound infected probably trying to do too much because the first time had been a breeze. Overall though I was glad to have had them both by c/s

ShinyBandana · 12/06/2023 15:45

*planned procedure. Not manned.

Kalodin · 12/06/2023 16:25

@Emhead93 Yes, I belive your MW to be correct from what I've read. It's classed as a "non recurring indicator". Did you labour at all prior the c-section?

Emhead93 · 12/06/2023 22:26

@kalodin no I didn't labour at all went up for reduced movement and she was out via Emergency C-section with in an hour.
Thank you I'll give that a read
