Nausea wisdom required!

Hi, hopefully someone can give me a bit of advice. During my last pregnancy, I had nausea from 9 weeks until labour. Without ruining anyone’s dreams tonight I’m talking being sick in the car, being sick after liquids and most meals. I was getting severe nose bleeds, and when my urine was checked at my appointments they always mentioned a potential kidney infection/it was evident I was dehydrated. I used to carry dog poo bags around with me as sick bags, it was that bad!

I tried 2 types of anti sickness tablets, and the general feedback I got was that I just needed to suck it up. All in the name of things being natural 😅 Also because I wasn’t hospitalised, it wasn’t deemed as serious, but as a FTM I think I just suffered in silence a lot (sorry for sounding like a big baby myself, but it was bloody grim!)

I’m currently pregnant again and starting to experience the same. My old job I could hide it/manage it slightly more, but I’m generally feeling run down and dreadful. I’m not too sure if anyone has any experience of the same thing, and if their GP or midwife had any suggestions/was supportive. At times I do think I should have had some IV fluids, but covid was always used as a reason to stay out of hospital.

Basically please be honest- is there anything that might help/should I push my midwife/GP or should I stock up on dog poo bags?😎

x

Check out the hypermesis support thread they have some great advice on there. I was like you in my first pregnancy and sucked it up without the medication. This time with a one year old as well I couldn’t do that, it took about a month of trying 4 or 5 different medications but eventually I was prescribed Ordansetron by a lovely doctor who decided the benefits outweighed the risks. He also recommended going for IV fluids and the sickness injection as soon as I started to feel dehydrated.

Definitely look at the hypremesis thread it helped me so much.

My experience with GPs (and this may differ) is that they would prescribe the first level medication but were concerned about prescribing anything stronger. I was very unwell and was admitted to hospital for fluids and that’s where I managed to get several different stronger meds including Ondansetron which changed my pregnancy. It can be a bit of a fight to be seen in hospital, I had to have ketones of 4+ in my urine but once I was under hospital care it was so much easier.
