Gender slip up?

Hi

My first post so hope this is ok!

This is my second baby but my partners first, we agreed as soon as I found out I was pregnant that we did not want to know the gender and that a surprise was really important to us.

First scan-we were told to look away at the relevant point.

Second scan-again told to look away.

I then went away to our family holiday home for a week and unfortunately had a small bleed, so I ended up having to go to an unfamiliar hospital for triage. The care was great there (far better than my local hospital) and almost immediately I had a consultant giving me a scan. I told him we do not know the gender, but when he was speaking to the midwife he referred to the baby as “she” twice, and then for the remainder of the scan as “the baby”. I asked the midwife about this and she said “oh it doesn’t mean anything”. I told my partner about this as he hadn’t picked up at this stage and he was a bit cross with me as he felt I have revealed the gender but I reassured him that I’m sure they just use he/she pronouns depending on the doctors choice.

I know when I had my daughter, I also did not know the gender and she was referred to as “he”.

My question is has the consultant messed up and actually revealed we are having a baby girl? I know that traditionally “he” is used, so seems odd they said “she” twice.

Has anyone had a baby that was a boy but had scans referred to as “she”?

Thank you x

Doctors often defer to one or the other. It's 50/50 and you've convinced yourself it's a slip so if it's a girl you'll assume it was even if it wasn't 😂. You already have a girl so statistically slightly more likely to be another girl rather than boy.

Not sure why your partner is upset. At the end of the day you were there as an emergency and doctors focus was making sure you and baby were healthy, not making sure that their pronouns were ambiguous enough not to slip up on the sex!

You had a bleed, yet the issue is what pronoun the doctor referred to the baby by? 🤯

I went along to my friends 12 week scan and the sonographer said he a few times. The same person scanned me 3 weeks later and also said he, I think it’s so they’re not referring to the baby as “it”

They don’t like to say it so will tend to go to either he or she. It doesn’t mean anything. I don’t think there’s any traditional way they go. It’s more likely decided by the children in their own lives

My question is has the consultant messed up and actually revealed we are having a baby girl?

But no one can answer that 😂

In my experience they prefer to say he or she rather than it. He may have all girls in his family so said she.

No one can answer this question. As a sonographer myself I try to just say “baby” and have really trained myself to do this but occasionally it’s possible I may say “he/she” without any meaning.

What is important is the health of your baby, that is why they do the scan especially after a bleed - honestly the gender is the least important part and I don’t tend to look at it after the 20 week scan.
