I have just had my nuchal fold test at 12.5 weeks, I am 35 years old. The measurement was 1.8. Is this normal? I am so worried. Thanks

Yes, that's a pretty good measurement. Actually, I think that's what mine was (I'm 35 too) and that it gave me odds for Down's Syndrome of 1:1250 or so rather than the 1:235 that's the basic risk level for my age (I am coming up with those figures from memory, but they'll be approximately right). Did no one talk through what the measurement meant with you?

irrek · 21/02/2008 12:18

No one talked me through it, they were very reluctant o say anything until my blood test results come through. Do you happen to know if the NT measurement is the main way of finding a problem or if it is a combination?

That has put my mind at rest a litle thank you.

hi Irrek -
I have also had my nuchal fold test at 12.5 weeks and the measurement was 1.6mm which I was told as it was 3mm is considered low risk and I am 32.

PortAndLemon · 21/02/2008 12:33

That'll be why, then -- they'll only work out your odds once the blood test results are in. I had my NT scan done a couple of weeks before my PCT moved over to doing the integrated test (NT scan plus bloods), which is why I got given odds from the NT alone as they weren't checking my bloods. Doing the combination is more accurate, but your NT measurement on its own is fine, indeed significantly better than average for your age.

I can't decide whether it is safe to tell my work colleagues - I guess i should until i get my blood test results back - its so difficult hiding it.

Well if you were to lose the baby your work collegues would end up knowing anyway, but at least they'll be supportive if they knew you were pregnant in the first place (not that they wouldn't be anyway). Just tell who you are comfortable in knowing your business basically.

hiya i had 1.8 too, its a good result x

karney · 21/02/2008 16:37

Hi irrek, I'm the same at the moment, waiting for the blood results back. I had 1.5 which they said was a good result (i,m 39yrs). So I,m positive. Think yours sounds that way too.xx

Hi

I am 35 and at 12 weeks the NF came back at 3.4! I had a CVS and everything turned out to be fine. 3 is a the maximum limit under which it's considered normal. The NFT is more reliable than the blood test (said both of my doctors).

PetitFilou1 · 21/02/2008 18:03

Mine was 1.6 but they wouldn't give me a risk (I'm also 35) until my blood results come through. The problem is that because of our age you automatically come out as high risk based on the nuchal fold test and your age alone. The blood test is much much more accurate. I have had to tell my work colleagues as they had started to guess (it being my third) so will have to deal with it if all is not well (though no reason it shouldn't be). Good luck

cushioncover · 21/02/2008 18:25

Don't forget to take the CRL into account as a long baby will have a thicker NF result.

Breizhette, the 'bloods' you have in conjunction with the NF scan are slightly different from the 'triple or Bart's test' bloods that are standard in areas that don't offer the Nuchal scan. They aren't so reliable as having a Nuchal scan and having a Nuchal + the corresponding bloods gives the most accurate result.

I was 1.0 with DC1. I was 1.9 with DC2 who was much longer so both gave me a pretty similar result. I think with DC1 it was 1:25000 and with DC2 it was 1:20000.

See if you can ask them the measurement adjusted for your age - this is much more reassuring than a percentage. I was told it was 1.5, which means sod all for me, but felt completely reassured when they said it was the same risk as for a 15 year old. Quite pleased as I am 38!

Lordashley · 21/02/2008 21:35

I think you really need to wait until the blood tests come through and you are given your overall odds.

My NF measurement was 1.8mm, but after bloods my risk of DS came back at 1:199 (I am 35).

I subsequently had an amnio which revealed the baby does not have DS.
