Panicing over screening results!

Have had the blood screen test for Downs done and MW said if it was low risk it would be posted to me and if it was high risk it would go to her and she would call me! MW said results would take a week....and it's been a week and they aren't here! So now I'm getting all worried! DH says to be patient as we a relying on a combination of NHS and Royal Mail! But no one has actually explained what happens if it is High Risk, does it mean more tests? I know it is silly panicing but I'm at home all day and climbing the walls!!

Right, firstly calm down.

Yes, they get posted to you if they're low risk but even if they come back high risk it's not the end of the world.

If you are high risk you will be offered an amnio which will tell you for definite if the baby has one of the three chromosomal abnormalities tested for including downs.

Even if they are high risk rememebr that whatever your risk that is it- a risk calculated on various factors.

Please don't worry- ring your midwife if you're worried

TotalChaos · 21/02/2008 10:40

agree with pixie.

Ring your midwife.

ring your midwife

If it is 'high risk' - and depending on your hospital that is 1 in 250 or 1 in 200 (so still less than 0.5% risk), then you will probably be called for an appointment at the hospital to talk through the results and you will probably be offered an amnio. You might get another scan if there's any doubt about your dates as they can affect results. It's up to you whether you have more tests - I had a 1 in 200 'risk' with my second pg but chose not to have the amnio or anything invasive.

Give your midwife a ring - she will know if the results are being slow coming in at the moment and she will be able to tell you about the procedures in your area. And don't panic! it does no good at all .

Piffle · 21/02/2008 10:51

mine never got posted, I got nothing, just the next time I went to the midwife she said oh your bloods were fine
I would say therefore no news is good news

bebejones · 21/02/2008 11:00

DH has talked me down off the ceiling. Am just being a paranoid 1st timer!! I do have a tendency to be over anxious!! Have an appointment Monday so if I have heard nothing by then I will ask. As DH says this is the NHS and Royal Mail combined....a deadly combination!!

Piffle - Same happened with us. We found out 5 weeks after - 'oh yea, bloods are normal'

OatcakeCravings · 21/02/2008 13:08

I didn't get any results posted either - I'm sure my midwife said the opposite - that I'd get a letter if there is a problem.

bebejones · 25/02/2008 15:31

Still no results! Doctor couldn't help this morning as was not my usual doctor! Not entirely sure what to do. Have heard from lots of people that they can be fairly lazy about letting you know and dont want to be over paranoid and bug the hospital/midwife for them! Should I just hang on and wait and see?

Bebejones which hospital are you at and which tests have you had?

PetitFilou1 · 25/02/2008 15:42

I was told it would take two weeks for a result and that they would ring if a problem but I would get a letter if not. It is hard waiting. If you don't get a letter in the next couple of days, just ring for the result. I agree, no news is normally good news. Worry about what to do if it is high risk when/if you know, not before!

bebejones · 25/02/2008 16:08

Its the Downs Screening test had the 2nd bit done well over a week ago & was told by MW that the low risk result would be with me in a week! Think Im just being a panicy first timer!! But it is playing on my mind as things have been a bit rough so far!

Bebejones - which hospital? Which test (triple? double? combined? integrated?)?

GerrardWinstanley · 25/02/2008 16:31

honestly, just phone the midwife. All this worry isn't good for you. If you;re worried they'll mark your hospital file as neurotic first-timer, just make up a story like a work coleague has just had bad triple test results and that meant you just wanted the reassurance that your results were fine.

They really do contact you very quickly if the results are not so good. It's really not worth another minute of needless worry tho - phone the hospital and see if they have your results yet.

bebejones · 25/02/2008 21:14

It's Stroud Hospital but think my results are from Gloucester as Stroud is a very small hospital! Dont know what type of test it was, I had bloods done at 12 weeks and then again at 16 weeks! Feeling reasssured by the no news is good news and DH seems very relaxed about it too so is just me being neurotic!

It might have taken DAYS for hospital 'transport' to have collected your sample and taken it to Gloucester - and your MW probably meant it would take a week for the lab to process it after that. And then there's the 2nd class post the NHS uses to send out results... Ring your Midwife tomorrow but don't lose any sleep in the meantime.

Are you likely to be 'high risk' btw (I mean old, like me)?

Hi bebejones, I got my scan and blood results within a few days because the tests showed that I had a higher risk than the standard cut-off of 1 in 250. My feeling is that they normally tell you as soon as they can if the results come back high-risk so that you can make a decision about further testing sooner rather than later. This is even more likely given that you're already 16 weeks, so I'd say no news is more likely to be good news than not.

janinlondon · 26/02/2008 15:30

Bebejones if you still haven't got your results, you could phone Gloucestershire Royal on 08454 225 211. Susan R-o-b-j-o-h-n-s there can get your results sent to your surgery. She can't actually give out your result but she can get the ball rolling. HTH.

janinlondon · 26/02/2008 16:06

Bump for Bebejones....

bebejones · 27/02/2008 21:42

Panic over.....results arrived today, and they are low risk! Thank you everyone for being so calming!
