I have Gd and am petrified of what this means for the future and it's making me panic to think I'll have type 2 in 5 years or so. So I guess my question is, did anyone have GD And NOT go on to develop diabetes later on in life? Did you do anything different???

I can't answer your question as I was only diagnosed in this pregnancy (currently 36 weeks). But from what I've read, there's a 50% chance of developing it within 5 years. We're obviously predisposed to developing it so I plan to make some changes once baby has arrived.

In my area, they will refer me to the nationwide Healthier You programme after the baby is born. It might be worth asking your diabetic midwife about that? It's focused on preventing type 2.

Good luck with your pregnancy!

@Wigggggly that's interesting about a 50% chance of developing Type 2 within 5 years. I had insulin dependent GD with all three of my pregnancies - youngest is 8.5 now and no sign of developing it yet.

I'm aware that I am at higher risk, but tbh I knew this anyway as there is a very strong history of Type 2 on my DF's side (DF, paternal grandmother and paternal uncle) so I'm conscious that I need to be careful.

@hettiethehare hopefully that means you'll never develop it! I really hope mine goes afterwards. My DF also has type 2 but I've got my own risk factors of high BMI and previous big baby. I'm glad we get the annual blood check as I think that'll be an annual reminder and motivator!

I had insulin resistance before I fell pregnant and then had GD with both pregnancies. I have not developed type 2 and youngest is 15. I am also no longer insulin resistant.

Had GD on my 4th child and diagnosed as T2 3 years later.

I can't reassure you long term as I'm not out of the 5 year bracket, but I had GD in 2021 and my checks so far have been fine (1 straight after birth and 2 annual checks).

I'm also really conscious about tackling my risk of developing type 2, but all you can do is try your best diet and exercise wise, and try and get into good sustainable habits to keep yourself a healthy weight.
For me it's helped me put exercise up my priority list, it's an essential activity rather than a hobby or luxury

I’ve had GD twice in the past 15 years. Didn’t need insulin though as I controlled via a strict low carb diet. Never had a worrying blood sugar result since and I tend not to worry about it anymore.
