Low platelets - is there anything I can do?

I'm having a planned c section at the end of next week, and my platelets have been going down steadily since December - 109, then 104, and 89 two days ago. If they go under 80, they'd apparently be reluctant to give me epidural/spinal block, so would have to have c/s under general anaesthetic which is obviously a major worry for me. Does anyone have any advice on anything I can do to stop platelets dropping lower, or can I try to argue the case with anaesthetist for letting me have epidural/spinal? Would be grateful for any advice...

Have they said why they think your platelets are low?
I would ask to see a haematologist asap

My platelets went into single figures and had to have a transfusion on them before I could have emergency C Section. My low platelets were due to HELLP which is a complication of preeclampsia.
I would ask some questions if I were you.

I'd second what WingsOfAnAngel says - I too had HELLP in Dec last year and low platlets is a sign of this.

Have you had any other complications such as high blood pressure, Protein in your urine, pain under your ribs, shoulder pain or flashing lights/headaches? If you have any of these symptoms please do get yourself checked out. Really don't want to worry you but I only realised that I had HELLP when it was almost too late.

Like WingsOfAnAngel I had to have a transfusion (amongst many other things to stablise me) before having an emergency C-section under GA.

I'd ask your Dr a few questions about HELLP and see if they suspect you have it...

Sure you will be fine and it sounds like you are being monitored but better to be safe than sorry.

How are you have you spoken to anyone ?

Hope you are ok.

Thanks for responses. I'm fairly sure it's not a complication of pre-eclampsia as I have absolutely no other symptoms - my blood pressure is normal, urine fine, no swelling or headaches. I've been told by consultant and midwife separately in the last week that decreased platelets is a gestational thing, and should go back to normal once baby is delivered. So I guess I just need to keep my fingers crossed that it stays above 80 for another week. Am getting another blood test and seeing anaesthetist on Monday, so might ask if c/s can be brought forward a few days to avoid general anaesthaetic...

Hello, I have had the same condition in my first pregnancy and second time around. First time I had a spinal and forceps delivery with platelets at 59. They try to avoid this though as it can lead to uncontrolled bleeding, hence the genral anaesthetic. It is difficult, and I am sure your anaesthetist can give you all the options. Is the Cs avoidable? Good luck
