Large haematoma and heavy bleeding

Hi everyone, would love to hear from others that have been in a similar position. Found out at 7 week scan that we're having twins! Then last Sunday at 8+1 I started spotting, cramping then bleeding heavily. Went to ED who found two babies measuring well and good heartbeats and said possibly a subchorionic haematoma but they couldn't really see one. The next day I went for a private scan and the sonographer found a huge (2.2 ×4.4cm) "collection" under both babies above the cervix. He didn't seem overly concerned but referred me to the EPU who are refusing to see me as they have no treatment for that other than to check pregnancy is viable which was already done in the ED. I was advised by the emergency department to go on bed rest. We were meant to go on holiday today but decided not to go. Feel a bit lost sitting here waiting. I have a toddler so I've asked family to help mind him this week while I sit on my bum. I have my booking appointment on the 12th June but that feels like yrs away! Do I get signed off work while I wait? Any advice or stories welcome 🙏 🤗

Firstly, congratulations on your twin pregnancy! That's very exciting!

Sorry to hear you're having to deal with this stress. I also had a subchorionic hematoma in my current pregnancy. I bled for 6 days straight when I was 4 weeks along and then weekly until 8 weeks. Heavy bright red bleeds with clots and cramping. It was terrifying but I was scanned each time and baby was fine. By the time they actually saw a hematoma at one of the scans (I think around 6 weeks) they said "oh it's not very big". Yeah, because I already bled everything out, Sherlock! 😂

The hematoma was gone by the time I had my dating scan at 12 weeks and I'm now 38 weeks along.

I think large hematomas can increase the chance of miscarriage depending on where they are but unfortunately there's not much you can do. Just rest and wait and try not to stress. I know, easier said than done.

I can't advise on work. I just know my bleeds were brought on every time I did anything remotely physical (hoovering, yoga etc) so maybe try and avoid stuff like that. I wasn't put on bed rest though, just took things a bit more slowly.

Hope all goes well for you! x

Following with interest as I've had SCH in 2/2 pregnancies, both of which ended in miscarriage but both times was told probably unrelated to the haematoma.

It sounds like good news if yours are underneath the babies.

From the research I have done there isn't a consensus on bed rest - it was certainly recommended 40 years ago but I was told it doesn't necessarily help. A friend had a SCH and bled throughout her pregnancy - the baby is now 7 and fully healthy.

Wishing you all the best.

PS - I would have hoped that EPU could at least confirm whether bed rest is necessary and for how long. And sign you off!

I had one, I think it's positive that it's below the babies. I bled until 16 weeks - although by that point it wasn't a lot of blood.

What job do you do? If it's anything physical I'd definitely get signed off.

Thanks for the replies ladies and so sorry to hear about your miscarriages @Whataretheodds. I had a MMC in Feb and they are just awful. I'm a nurse so my job is physical. I had a very busy weekend at work before

Not sure why my message cut off there and don't know how to delete!! Was saying had a busy weekend before the bleed and wonder if that's what brought it on. So hard to know what to do. I think I'll go for another private scan next week and see how babies and haematoma are getting on. Did the bleeding gradually ease up with you guys or all of a sudden? Xx

Sorry to hear about your MMC. I also had a MMC last year, right before getting pregnant again. I do wonder if there could be a link. I almost felt like my uterus hadn't quite recovered from the MC and that's why it developed a bleed. But who knows.

My bleeds just stopped. I had one last big gush at 8 weeks and then that was it.
