Offered a new job role, want to start trying to conceive soon, what would you do?

I’ve been offered a new job role with the same company, the only thing that will be changing is my job description.

We would like to start trying to conceive at the end of the year. I have been with the company nearly a year so far.

Would accepting a new job role be sensible? Should I let this hold me back? I would’ve been with the company a year and 9 months before going on maternity leave and in the new role for 9 months.

I overthink everything so it’s playing on my mind a bit.

thanks in advance

That’s absolutely fine.

Without a doubt, take the new role and don't worry about it.

I spent a lot of time worrying about this years ago - nearly didn't apply for new roles in case I fell pregnant but did - several years trying to conscience and several miscarriages later and I still don't have a child but am very glad I continued to develop my career in the meantime.

Obviously I'd really hope you wouldn't have the challenges we had but I wanted to just give an example that you never know where life will take you and you just have to make the right decisions for you now.

Good luck with the role.

Definitely go for it. I actually fell pregnant 3 months into a new job with a new employer. I was nervous telling them but they were great. Went on mat leave having been there for a year. I’ve been with the company for 5 years now and have been promoted twice. I’m glad I went for it and the company are glad to have me!

I changed jobs after I got married, went part time thinking I'd get pregnant straight away and would appreciate being pt. I didn't fall pregnant for two years! I just think of all the money I could have earned if I'd stayed full time until I was pregnant.

So, go for it. Not wishing fertility struggles on you, but you never know how long these things take. Well done on your promotion Smile

If you’ve been there a year already, and you’re not going to start trying till the end of the year then, even if you get pregnant in the first month you’ll have been there longer than a year and nine months by the time you go on maternity leave?

Either way, if you want the new role then take it. You’re not pregnant yet, or even actively trying, so I don’t think you’d be doing anything even slightly wrong (and I wouldn’t think you were even if you were already trying or even pregnant)

Definitely take it. Not wishing any struggles on you, but getting pregnant is far from predictable or guaranteed

peacelemon · 30/05/2023 20:58

Take it
