TV Scan 29wks Anxious

MN hive mind. I'm seeing a gynae consultant tomorrow morning for a full abdo ultrasound and also potentially a TVS. This is so they are aware of where my existing scarring and adhesions are from my previous endo surgeries. I'm a stage 4 endo warrior. They also want to check where a fibroid that has popped up is as it keeps moving dependent on which sonographer or Dr has done previous US.

I am terrified the TVS will cause bleeding, having had 5 previous episodes of bleeding during my pregnancy so far which they've not 100% pinned down the cause of. Last bleed was 03 April.

Not a stranger to Wanda due to endo and also being an IVF pregnancy. Although having people rummaging around down there is getting very triggering for me 😩

Am I being stupid to refuse the TVS due to this? Finding it very hard to wind down tonight to try and get some sleep 😴

Thank you kindly for constructive advice, suggestions and support 💜

Completely different scenario but I once declined a TV scan because I didn't want it to cause more bleeding. I know they say they don't cause bleeding but I was just so anxious because I'd had several episodes. However they've always been able to get a good view using abdominal.

Perhaps if the abdominal images are good enough you can say you're not comfortable with the TV scan.

On the other hand I think it's completely normal to be feeling anxious right now and hopefully on the day the staff will put you at ease.

@fguuh thank you for replying I really appreciate it. I'm terrified it causes another episode of bleeding TMI but I'm still checking each time I go to the loo and give my husband a thumbs up to say all is OK which the PNMHT midwife has said is absolutely fine to do as I had another MW tell me to 'just stop being so anxious'🤞🏻 they are able to get the images they need from abdo US 💜 to go with a full bladder as it's easier to release than top up quickly although some days I'm in the loo multiple times needing to go 😅

I was exactly the same as you, luckily I had a fantastic midwife. There always seems to be one who doesn't understand anxiety etc though which is a shame.

I know the days always seem to drag when you're living with anxiety but your baby will be here before you know it. Good luck tomorrow and congratulations

1- you do not need to have the tv scan.. If you do not consent to it they won’t do it.. they’re not going make you or see more than the cervix and your adnexum at this stage and unless it’s a scan to assess placenta site and you have a high BMI which would restrict views, there’s little at 29 weeks that they will be able to see more clearly TV than transabdominally.
2- the reason the fibroid moves each scan is not dependant on who scans its because your uterus is expanding, it will not be in the same place at each scan as it will move as your uterus grows bigger..
3- unless they’re looking directly at the cervix for a sliding sign or a previous C section scar, adhesions and scar tissue is nigh on impossible to seen with ultrasound (MRI is generally performed for this), and an upper abdominal scan will be limited due to the pregnancy obscuring views that wouldn’t normally be seen in a non pregnant abdomen.

Thanks @Wobblybobb I appreciate your reply

  1. Not got a high BMI - 27.1 at booking appt and I've not went to hell on a handcart with my eating habits during pregnancy. Will they mark me as difficult though if I don't consent?
  1. Thank you, I understand it can move as uterus stretches - daft question though can it switch from left to right which seems to be the case. Then again this could be an error as at latest growth scan the sonographer told me baby was breach but had recorded as head down. They only changed it when I queried.
  1. I'm not sure what you mean by sliding sign and I thought it was odd to do US but then again it's the same hospital that said they could 'see' endo on an US which is utter nonsense 🤨

@Wobblybobb have looked up sliding sign, very interesting thank you I know at my previous endo surgery the consultant freed my uterus / bowel / bladder and there was pouch of douglas involvement too

Consultant was lovely and able to get what they needed from the abdo US, baby still breech and was being a wee toad as their bum was in the way
