I have a relatively common name that also has several relatively-common spellings.

I have to spell my name every time!

In English 'Nancy' Is by far the most conventional spelling. Just spell it that way or choose something else!!

continentallentil · 28/05/2023 22:47

Nancy

Anything else is daft and will be v annoying for her (unless you’re Welsh). It’s a nice name.

I like Irene as long as it’s the proper 3 syllable pronunciation and not the American Eye-reen which is horrible.

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/05/2023 22:59

It’s a lovely name. Spell it properly.

SourDoughToast · 28/05/2023 23:38

Nancy.

Please don't set her up for a life of having to spell her name out all the time - and people thinking her parents are a bit thick for using a made up spelling.

DH's parents gave him a 'unique' spelling of his name and he hates it. People do joke about it unfortunately.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 29/05/2023 05:59

I also don’t see the point in not going with Nancy. Is anyone ever impressed by a name when they find out it’s spelt differently?
”Oh, Nancy? That’s an ok name. Oh wait spelt with an I and an E? I take that back that’s great.”

Since when was the Eye-reen pronunciation of Irene American? I am Scottish and all the Irene's I know are pronounced like that. I know none pronounced with three syllables.

Amby1 · 29/05/2023 09:59

I would honestly just go with Nancy. She'll have to go through her life correcting people and constantly telling people how to spell her name.

Emotionalmama · 29/05/2023 15:00

The Irish way to spell it is Neansaí and I personally think it’s so lovely there again I’m a sucker for Irish names

drpet49 · 29/05/2023 15:22

Why? She’ll spend her whole life correcting spellings of her name.

Nanci/ Nancie is ridiculous. Just stick to Nancy for goodness sake.

Emotionalmama · 29/05/2023 15:25

Why are people being so mean on here to OP? OP honestly spell it whatever what you like, I think they’re both lovely ways and it’s whatever makes you happy. Can’t decide if some people on here are just vanilla or plain bitchy 😂

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 29/05/2023 15:27

You're going to be saying it far more than you're going to be writing it, surely?

So, as it's said 'Nancy', nobody in the supermarket, as you yell it out over the baked bean arrangement, is going to know whether it's spelled Nancy or Nanci or Nansseeeee. Give it the easiest, most straightforward spelling.

LolaSmiles · 29/05/2023 15:32

Personally unless a spelling was a particular spelling from one of the parents' heritage, I'd not choose a name if I didn't like the conventional spelling of it.

Choosing a deliberately different spelling for no other reason than wanting it to look different seems unfair to me as the child ends up having to explain all their life "no like (name), but with (insert parental creative variation here)".

BurscoughBooths · 29/05/2023 15:38

My mum’s best friend is called Nancie. She’s 90. It’s hardly a “parental creative variation”, just an alternative spelling that’s been in use for decades

In Wales - Nansi

TrueScrumptious · 29/07/2023 12:09

Nansi is the Welsh spelling and a valid name.

Peony654 · 30/07/2023 07:21

Use the most common spelling (Nancy) or chose another name. Poor kid otherwise
