Painful cramping and lower backache 14 weeks pregnant

Hi everyone,

I have contacted my midwife regarding this issue and the team there seem unconcerned.

For the last few days I've been having quite intense episodes of cramping and lower backache. I let the MW team know two days ago that I was having these pains and they basically said 'unless you're bleeding, you have to assume everything is ok'.

It has now got worse today and I am quite uncomfortable. I can however hear my baby on my Doppler and have been able to do this since 10 weeks so it is the only reassuring thing at the minute.

Did anyone experience this at this time? I've had a previous MC and it just makes me so anxious !

I'm a bit further ahead at 18 weeks but I've started to get leg cramping during the night, I've had it for about 1-2 weeks, my pregnancy app is actually saying it's normal around this time.

Also the lower backache can start this early, mine has if I stand up for too long. Is it an ache from standing or a period cramp type ache?

Hi OP, I would advise you to book a private scan if you can to put your mind at rest. Use of dopplers really isn't recommended as it's very common to hear other noises that can be mistaken as babies heartbeat- such as your own heartbeat and general noise around the placenta. If you look it up the advice is a big no for this reason. It would also be very very unusual to hear babys heartbeat through a doppler from that early, hence why midwives generally don't listen in until 16 weeks.
Hopefully the no bleeding is a good sign as the midwives have said. All the best OP.

I agree with the pp about trying to get a scan if things dont settle soon.

Like you, I didn't have any bleeding, and it ended up being a missed miscarriage weeks later at 15 weeks. Hopefully all will settle soon. xx

@Bellabon it's definitely babies HB... had many private scans and definitely know the sound. Also have a heartbeat bear from my firstborn and the sound is identical. Ranges from 140-150BPM every time. There's no similar sound to babies HB lol

@Cloverforever wow! I'm so sorry you had to go through that, that's heartbreaking. Did they tell you at what stage the baby stopped growing? X

Yes, between 11-12 weeks. I should have been seen earlier but wasnt due to bank holidays, cancelled check-ups etc. I let time go on trusting that I was safe as it was 12 weeks plus.

Hence my gentle warning to you to look after yourself and don't always trust the midwives to do it for you If you feel something is amiss.
