High ketones

I've just been for B12 injections at my doctors and felt like I had a water infection coming on so I asked the nurse to dip my urine. It shown indicators of infection...blood etc but she said the ketones were through the roof.

She spoke to the GP who prescribed antibiotics but also gave me a sample pot and asked for it to be done once the antibiotics were finished to check the ketones again. I've had a Google (probably not the best idea) and it talks about diabetes. Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks :)

Have you been struggling with sickness? X

No not at all I'm 22 weeks now and the nausea stopped around 14 weeks. She said I need to drink and eat more but difficult when I'm at work.

I’ve got gestational diabetes and have been on insulin since early on because of it. I ended up in hospital due to high ketones a few weeks ago. High ketones were an indication that my body was extra insulin resistant and I ended up quite poorly, culminating in a gastric bleed. It got dramatic very quickly. If you’ve not been tested for GD ask for it to rule it out x

You can have high ketones without being diabetic just means your using fat for fuel instead of glucose.
My son went into DKA with high ketones though, so if you start being sick or feeling very unwell don't mess about seek medical advice.

Yes I had high ketones in my urine in my first pregnancy which was put down to going too long without eating/not eating enough. Ketones show up in your urine when you fast.

I had gestational diabetes and high keytones in pregnancy. I was kept in and on a drip with fluids for around 6 days to help as they said it was from dehydration.

Thanks all, I think I'm probably doing too much I've been working 12 days on the trot without a day off and 2 younger children to care for as well as everything else. I'll increase my fluid and food intake and see how it goes, hopefully that's all.

I felt tired. I’d had a few high blood sugar readings. Very dry mouth overnight. That day I went for a nap (unlike me) woke up feeling sick and once I started couldn’t stop. Was in hospital 2 hours later. Had a DKA and ended up admitted and on a drip. Not fun.
