Hi everyone,

Found out last week that I was pregnant with twins which is amazing and scary in equal measure!

The fatigue though is almost unbearable and has got significantly worse this week. It reminds me of when I had post-viral syndrome 11 years ago except that this time it's coupled with insomnia so I can't even get the rest I need!

I have to drag myself out of bed. I'm only working 3 days a week but it takes all I have to get through those three days. I seem to be ok if I can go back to bed in the afternoon but I had to come home from work early today because I just can't handle it. I have no idea how people work full time like this!

Please tell me it gets easier!!

First trimester is awful anyway so doubly so with twins! Take it easy and be kind to yourself- don't feel guilty about resting and not doing anything you're growing 2 people! It will get easier once you're in your second trimester. Good luck!xx

Findyourneutralspace · 24/05/2023 14:25

Your hormones are rising rapidly, which will knock you out. It’s always tiring in the first trimester but doubly so with twins.
It usually eases off around the second trimester, then the third is knackering again, but you have maternity leave to look forward to.

Congratulations!

Congratulations on your twins!! Mine have just turned 2!!!

Do you know what type of twins your having?

I wont give you an account of my shit show of a pregancy with them and will just hope that someone else with twins will come and tell you they had a beautiful bloomimg pregnancy compared to mine..... sorry I know that's not helpful. Haha

But twins are Brilliant, It's all worth it

Hey! I'm going to be 16 weeks pregnant with twins on Friday. I was exhausted in the first trimester, but started to feel better from about 10 weeks and am currently feeling great :) Enjoying this middle bit while it lasts as the third trimester is going to be tough... But yes, hang in there, you should start to feel better soon! xx

Nadinya · 24/05/2023 15:09

I'm currently 35 weeks with twins. The first trimester all I wanted to do was sleep, the second trimester was slightly better energy wise but not by that much in all fairness.
From about 31 weeks it really started for me, everything hurts, no energy, the heartburn. The kicks and tumbles and hiccups are very nice tho but it's hard.

Mentally I found the second trimester the hardest in a way. I started feeling my babies quite late and my growth scans didn't start till 24 weeks so a long time between scans with lessening symptoms made my anxiety rise. The third trimester is without a doubt physically really hard.

But seeing them grow and preparing for them is incredibly nice. Thinking about how they will be together is lovely and I can now hold on to the fact that whatever happens in the next 3 weeks I can hold them in my arms!

So I can't tell you the pregnancy gets easier but the nearer to the end the more you can dream about your babies!

i was wretched in the first few months - so tired, and knocked sideways with sickness. middle bit was ok, last bit wasn't so bad. was still very glad when they were on the outside of me though :)

Blue2020 · 24/05/2023 20:58

I didn’t have twins, I was very tired and sick in the first trimester. It turned out I had low iron levels and needed tablets. It could just be due to having twins and pregnancy in general but it could be iron? The blood test at the booking apt picked it up.

Dinneronmybfpillow · 24/05/2023 21:07

I was shattered and emotional in the early stages of my pregnancy (found out it was twins at the 12 week scan). Rest of it was smooth sailing though, apart from the fucked pelvis due to SPD but I had that with my singleton too. Delivered at 38 weeks and went straight home from delivery suite.
Lots and lots of twin parents have a rough pregnancy, often early babies and lots of NICU/SCBU time but that doesn't mean it will happen for everyone. Good luck!

21 weeks with my MCDA boys and I’m not going to sugar coat it, hasn’t got much better for me with the exhaustion!
although I feel hugely lucky to have had no nausea or anything too grim at all in the first trimester :)
im sure the third trimester will be fun though… already feel gigantic

Before we knew (12 week scan) it was twins, I genuinely went to my life long doctor, and genuinely said "Martin, I think I'm dying"

I've never known anything like it.

However, it does get better. And when you get to see just how amazing twins are, you'd do it all again in a heartbeat.

Congratulations, on your very special bundle!

'I think I'm dying'! Is literally how I felt yesterday afternoon!! Thank you for the reassurance!

@Dinneronmybfpillow that's good to know! I'm worried about delivery as mine are likely to be identical twins (we only transferred one embryo for IVF so I don't see how it can be any different) and concerned they'll just give me a c-section. Nice to hear that things went easy for you!

@JustJaneinLeeds ooh I hope so!!

Mine are MCDA, although not IVF. Are they your first? I'm a little different as had delivered vaginally before. I also went against NICE guidelines to defer my induction until 38 weeks which is less usual.
They tend to be more cautious with IVF babies (although I don't know why), so I would prepare yourself for lots of pressure for c-section.

MuchTooTired · 26/05/2023 17:49

I think my all day hangover exhaustion subsided around 16/17 weeks with my DTs. Middle bit of pregnancy was ok, but by the time I got to 30 weeks pregnant I measured 42 weeks gone so was massive. By the time I delivered them at 36+5 I measured in at 54 weeks pregnant so was absolutely huge and couldn’t do very much at all!

Ironically, I got more sleep with twin newborns than I did in the last few weeks of pregnancy. I did have an elcs, because I had severe pe and we needed to get the babies out quickly although they would’ve induced me instead if I’d wanted that.

Good luck with your pregnancy, whilst I thought pregnancy absolutely sucked my babies are more than worth every rubbish moment!

mauveiscurious · 26/05/2023 18:09

The tiredness is awful. You need to eat really welll, butter cheese, eggs, oily fish, grains and beans. You are building two bodies and brains. I was nearly insane for baked potatoes beans and cheese.

It will pass but this stage is the most important for their brain development and nutrition

mauveiscurious · 26/05/2023 18:11

I had an easy pregnancy and a natural birth ( with drugs obviously)

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 26/05/2023 18:27

My symptoms were strongest in the first 6 weeks. I remember taking the test bang on when my period was due on the basis I was either pregnant or very ill! Grin

I was working full time throughout but it was pretty manageable, especially after the first trimester. I was struggling to walk more than 5 minutes by the end though (had a c-section at 36+3).

I was worried about babies needing NICU or extra interventions but in the end both were fine and came home with me at 2 days old. I now have two chunky 3 year olds using me as a footrest!
