Can I go to any maternity unit in an emergency?

Baby is not kicking and usually would at this time. I’m going to give it a few hours but I’m tearing my hair out.

I am in a different city attending a funeral. Can I go to the maternity unit here or do I have to travel back? It’s about 3 hours away to my hospital.

Try having a cold drink and then a hot drink as that can sometimes get baby moving.

Yes you can go to any maternity hospital

I wouldn't leave it though.

Magicmagician · 17/05/2023 08:35

Yep you can just turn up, sending all the best

nicericey · 17/05/2023 08:36

Yes go now

PickledScrump · 17/05/2023 08:40

Yes, don’t leave it though. Drinking cold drinking or having sugar to get baby to move is not recommended. Definitely get checked to put your mind at ease

Danikm151 · 17/05/2023 08:42

Don’t leave it a few hours. Go now

Dyra · 17/05/2023 08:42

Yes they will see you. Hopefully you've got your notes with you. But if you don't it'll be ok.

My sister had bleeding while staying at our mum's (different city) at ~19 weeks, and was seen. All was fine.

Hopefully baby gets a-wriggling soon to assuage your worries.

Thank you all. You’re right I shouldn’t leave it too long, I’ve only been awake 1.5 hours though it’s just she usually gets going straight away in the morning. Maybe will wait 1 hour instead? Have eaten and going to see if that makes a difference but otherwise I’ll go to the nearest maternity unit.

@Al991 go and get checked out. It’s better safe than sorry. If you have a ctg and it’s all fine then it’s great and reassures you. I found when I was on the machine I didnt realise how much he would kick until I looked at the number I had pressed it. How far along are you?

Mine was always active in the evenings 7-11pm from 22+ weeks. At 31weeks I had an evening without any. I waited until the next day it got to midday and I decided to call and go in. Everything was fine with movements (although my little one loved to fail the ctg’s) but while I was in they saw I had a high bp at 4am, and that was the start of preeclampsia for me. They kept a closer eye on me from then, and I had my little boy at 35+0 when I got worse. So it was really good that I decided to go in that day. I thought I would be wasting their time but it’s exactly why they are there.

Just go

SomethingAboutNothing · 17/05/2023 10:11

Yes you can absolutely go to a nearby unit, but make sure you call first. And as others have said, if you are worried it's best to just get seen, not put it off. I'm sure little one will start kicking up a storm as soon as they put you on the monitor but you need that reassurance.

Verite1 · 17/05/2023 10:11

It might just be that baby has moved into a position where you can’t feel movement (eg behind placenta). However definitely go and get checked out - no point in waiting. If I remember rightly, that tell you to go straight to maternity department if movements reduce/stop etc. Good luck.

SheilaFentiman · 17/05/2023 10:11

Go. I once got off a train to work around 20 weeks and cabbed it to the nearest hospital, I got a scan done and a reassuring result.

WooWooWinnie · 17/05/2023 10:19

You shouldn’t wait and you can go to any, but it is a good idea to phone first. You should be able to find the relevant triage number on the trust website.

BertieBotts · 17/05/2023 10:21

You should go because there has been a change, even if she gets moving again later. Any change in movements should be seen.

It's fine to go to a unit that isn't your usual one. The only time you would need to be picky about which hospital to go to is if you think you're in premature labour - you need to be at one with the right resources (NICU etc). But honestly in an emergency, just go to the nearest hospital, they will do what they can and/or move you to the right place if you need it.

Pinkplasticbathcup · 17/05/2023 10:23

Yes go, I went to a different one at 32 weeks as staying at mums when I had reduced movement. I did ring first though. They did moan at me for not having my notes, but they saw me immediately

Likethestarsabove547 · 17/05/2023 10:32

Yes you can go to any hospital. I was on holiday in Cornwall last year and had to go.
Please dont wait just go now.
Not saying this to scare you but if something is wrong an hour makes all the difference

RemainAtHome · 17/05/2023 10:40

You should go.
If possible ring them first. Bring your notes if you have them.

Do not wait. You know better than anyone else what is normal for you and your baby.

Please seek help. We get mums all the time turning up out of area, we are there to keep you both safe.
