Im currently 19 weeks pregnant and amazed at how little weight i have put on so far even though i have a huge bump!

Last time i was weighed at 11 weeks i was 10 stone, now at 19/nearly 20 weeks Ive weighed myself and only gained 3.5 llbs?

should i be concerned and be gaining more by now?
I had no morning sickness to lose weight or been ill and eating plenty of rubbish/junk food!

It's not uncommon.
It should start piling up more quickly from now on. About a lb/week they say, but that varies a lot.

If you have concerns talk to your MW and mention it when you have your 20 week scan to see how baby is growing.

Count your blessings!

PS: for comparison, I'm 28 weeks and just hit the +1st mark.
Most of it between weeks 22-28. Hope to finish +2 and not more!
Last time I put on 3 stone!

lollipopmother · 19/02/2008 08:49

I've already put on 9lbs but I'm not kidding myself into thinking that's anything to do with the baby, I'm only 12 weeks pg! I'm now on a 'diet' as that sort of weight gain is just ridiculous, I'll be obese by the time I'm 20 weeks.

Carey87 · 19/02/2008 08:58

Ive only just hit the 1st mark at 31 weeks!!! Such a big shock!!! feel like an effing elephant!!

MrsTittleMouse · 19/02/2008 09:12

I was told that 2 stone was "average", 1 stone is the safe minimum and 3 stone is good if you're underweight to start with. The 2 stone is supposed to be 5lb absolute maximum in the first trimester (but none is good too) and then a pound a week after that. So you "should" have gained 6 pounds by now. Meaning that you're not far off and that your weight gain is absolutely fine.

spugs · 19/02/2008 09:38

my 'average' weight gain is 3 stone. ive put on the same amount with all 3 pregnancies and the huge majority of it in the last 20 weeks . i was underweight to start with though

sap1066 · 21/02/2008 12:56

Am currently feeling terrible due to stupid weight gain. 1st pregnancy and I am 19 wks but have put on a stone already. V depressed at seeing 11st hit the scales this morning. Have no bump either, so weight gain is MarsBar not baby related. Baby doesn't actually grow on my hips (thighs, double chin)last time I looked either. Saw a woman on tv who only put on 3lbs in 9 months so am going on severe diet to get back to reasonable weight. Loathe being so fat.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 21/02/2008 13:02

sap - you'll be building placenta and baby and holding water even if you can't see it. A stone at the halfway mark is fine. Don't worry about it. Eat sensibly if you're concerned but don't diet.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 21/02/2008 13:05

pigley - greatest weight gain happens between 20-26 weeks. I was still bumpless at 21 weeks, 2 weeks later I was very obviously pregnant.

I never weigh myself. Does that make me clever or a coward?!

sap1066 No no no! 3lb weight gain is really dangerous. It isn't just the weight of the baby that you need to put on, it's also the weight of the placenta, the amniotic fluid, the extra blood that you produce, the extra size of your uterus. Seriously, my doctor told me that even if you're seriously obese, they still want you to gain a stone.
You might be retaining water by now too and getting a bit puffy, but it will go when you give birth. Please don't beat yourself up about putting on weight in pregnancy!

MrsTittleMouse · 21/02/2008 13:29

Aha! Found the article. If you gain 30lb during pregnancy, only 7lb of that is made up of fat. The rest is:
baby 7.5lb
increase in uterus 2lb
placenta 1.5lb
amniotic fluid 2lb
breast enlargement 2lb (!)
extra blood and fluid 8lb
Cool eh?

slim22 · 21/02/2008 21:16

Well done mrs little mouse.
Think about that pigley.
Dieting absolutely out of the question. The second half of the pregnancy is actually when baby will be putting on weight and needing good food most.

Just ditch the sugar/cake/crisps diet and concentrate on eating well balanced meals and snack on protein which is what helps baby grow best,

ie:
-milk/soy milk/yogurt

  • eggs
-cottage cheese/any cheese and crackers
  • peanut butter and wholemeal toast
  • salmon/sardines/mackerel/ham/turkey/chicken breast salad in baked potato/wholemeal bread
-handful of almonds/cashews/peanuts/sunflower seeds -yogurt and fruit and granola

Don't agonise and treat yourself occasionally. Just don't keep too many temptations at home.

micegg · 21/02/2008 21:20

I am 34 weeks and have put on 16lbs so far. I guess most of its baby related but I also have some definate extra padding around my hips so I am not bothered.

Mintpurple · 22/02/2008 08:50

When I trained we were taught that it was average to put on a pound a month for the first half of pregnancy and a pound a week for the second half = about 25 lb or around 2 stones.

However, a lot of hospitals dont even bother weighing women now as it is such a waste of time, as the baby will take what it needs from your body, irrespective of what you eat. If you eat a really crappy diet high in sugars and starches and low in protein vitamins and minerals etc, you will be the one who suffers as your baby and the pregnancy takes what it needs and you are left with the remainder. Its also important that you dont 'eat for two', as packing on the weight is not healthy either, as Slim says, a normal balanced diet is best.

As a midwife I often see people with a horrible diet, who have put on next to nothing in pregnancy, or conversely have gorged on junk food and are huge, and oddly enough both womens babies will probably weigh much the same at birth.

As long as baby is growing well, and your m/w can tell you on palpation if this is the case, and you are eating a reasonable diet dont worry too much about putting on weight.

There are many other factors which will affect the size of your baby such as smoking, diabetes, pre-eclampsia etc much more than diet.

pigleychez · 22/02/2008 09:00

Slim22-

I have No intentions of dieting.
I was saying that i have only gained 3lbs so far at 20 weeks. I completely understand the importance of the extra weight gain and im sure from now on i will put more on more regularly.

My main concern was should i have gained more than 3lbs by now. From reading everyones posts it seems everyones so different and as long as your eating sensibly then you will gain what your body needs.
