Small bump at 24 weeks

I’m 24 weeks pregnant and starting to worry that my belly is really small. It has grown but not that much. Obviously can’t professionally measure it, but it seems like it’s a lot smaller than it should be. I would estimate about 20cm from trying to measure it myself.

I’ve got a MW appointment in 10 days, should I call someone beforehand to tell them my concerns? If so would I call triage or try to contact the family centre where I see my midwife?

Is it your first baby? My bump with my first didn't pop until about 25 weeks and it wasn't massive at that point.

Sorry meant to say if you are feeling movements like normal you probably don't need to see anyone but if you are concerned ring your midwife.

I wouldn't worry, there is huge variation in bump sizes. I only just popped at 23 weeks, everyone thought I was having a 6lb something baby and he was 8lb. Sister was much bigger with the same size baby.

Hiya, yes this is my first baby and I am feeling movements. As it’s my first i have nothing to compare the movements to but the baby is kicking throughout the day.

I’m glad it’s not just me that is small! I might end up ringing anyway though, just not sure of the right person to ring. At the same time if they’re just going to tell me to wait until my appointment there is an argument for not ringing. I’m just feeling worried.

Noone I didn't tell could tell I was pregnant until 30 weeks with my first! He hid well lol. I was just abit bloated looking until then, couldn't see anything with clothes on. Suddenly popped at 30 weeks but still measured small. Baby was born at 38 weeks and was 7lbs. He's now 4 and wears 6-7 clothes 🤣 try not to stress yourself xx

If it's your first baby it can be quite normal. Are you tall? I found my tall/slim friends took longer to show. I started showing around 20 weeks with my first. Currently 17 weeks with my second and I look bloody massive. I'm quite short so that could make a difference.

Al991 · 15/05/2023 20:56

@Ttcmumma did you get measured and were there any concerns about the size that you were or did they just take other stuff as indication that things were ok?

@blahblahblah1654 i am on the short side (5’4) but I’m slim with a very small frame. Before pregnancy I wore size 6-8. Not sure if that makes a difference…

@Al991 I had small bumps in both pregnancies, and by the end was measuring 7/8 weeks behind! I had many growth scans for both, but both DDs were born at full term with normal weights. Like you, I'm a 6/8 and petite.

Ttcmumma · 15/05/2023 21:33

@Al991 to be honest I was quite naive in that pregnancy so just took everything as it came. The bump measured behind a couple of times at normal midwife appointments so they just sent me for a couple of extra growth scans to check baby and he was always measuring fine so they weren't worried. Everyone carries different. I'm 5ft3 and was about 7 stone before falling pregnant so wouldn't consider myself tall x

pickd · 15/05/2023 21:40

First and foremost, if you are worried always always always get checked over.

However like others are saying it's really common to have a small bump in first pregnancies. Mine was tiny at that stage and I'm only 5'2". He did go on to have issues with growing but that was pre eclampsia which didn't happen until 33 weeks. The reason he was a small bump around week 24/25 is just a mix of him sitting quite far back, me having good strong tummy muscles at the time (not any more lol) and him being my first baby.

I was always measuring behind with my daughter and am 5ft. At 41 weeks I was measuring 30 weeks. She was fine in the growth scans. She wasn’t a big baby (6lb 12oz at 8 days late) but I’m not big so not surprising. I’m now 25+2 weeks with my second and my bump isn’t very big. My Midwife doesn’t measure fundal height until 28 week appointment as it’s not accurate until then (it’s not that accurate after then either but it’s the best they have to go on until you get a growth scan).

CityKity · 15/05/2023 22:26

Easier said than done, but try not to worry, everyone is different and there is no normal size bump until later down the line. For that very reason my midwife doesn’t even start measuring fundal height until 28weeks and even then a few centimetres off is usually within the margin of error.

I was also worried about this as have been able to hide my pregnancy for a while and still get shocked looks that I’m 6.5 months pregnant now. I tried to measure own fundal height before my 28 week appointment and measured 18cm! When I actually when to the appointment the midwife measured my uterus as a lot higher (just a few cm below my bra line) and lower that I had done from where I thought my visible bump was. I’m also petite (5’3) and it’s my first, so it’s very likely that baby is hiding behind your abs for a while. I’ve just taken a look back at my pictures from 24weeks and my bump has really popped since then (now 29weeks). At 24 weeks I just had a tiny paunch!
