Bmi is 35. I've been told to take aspirins everyday, 5mg of folic and vit d..... plus I'll get an extra scan.

I'm devastated I'm an obese, older (38) pregnant woman with an unplanned pregnancy.

Not much you can do for an immediate change, just concentrate on making steady healthy overall changes and keeping up with the medications/supplements you have been prescribed.

You aren't the first overweight and older mum and you won't be the last.

Hi @sillyonehetpes i was told to take asprin too during my pregnancy. It's good as the blood flows better which is good for the baby. My friend was also told to take asprin too. We were both about 40 years old when pregnant.
I had loads of extra scans too which was also really good as baby was being checked regularly.
Enjoy your pregnancy xx

It's just another thing.... I'm also worried about abnormalities

Im in the same boat, 37 and bmi 32, so on extra vitamins but allergic to asprin so not on that.

The extra scans are a good thing as they check the baby is healthy.

I had a good cry over the guilt of being overweight. I was told not to diet just eat a healthy balanced diet, which i havent been able to do yet as the nausea is too much, so living on sandwiches, crisps and biscuits. As soon as I am able I will make the healthier changes.

Just letting you know you aren't alone xx

It’s not too late. Managed by a doctor you can lose weight whilst pregnant but usually it isn’t advised. It’s more the advice to try not to put too much on.

if you don’t drink, cut out refined sugar and eat in moderation you should lose weight anyway whilst providing all you need to for your developing child but it is certainly not the time to crash diet or eat for 2. Be gentle with yourself

RebeccaCloud9 · 15/05/2023 08:23

Me too. Those medicines are totally fine for your baby so don't worry about them causing abnormalities. My DD was born in September and is absolutely wonderful and totally healthy. I had raised BP and extra monitoring, an extra stay in hospital but otherwise fine and now much lighter! Enjoy the extra scans and just try and keep as active as possible, eating as healthily as possible.

Ariela · 15/05/2023 10:41

Don't cut the healthy vitamin laden stuff eg steamed leafy green veg and don't add in extra lashings of sugary refined foods and you'll be fine.

sillyonehetpes · 15/05/2023 10:51

Lol when people assume I eat a bad diet :(

Well unless you have a medical condition which you didn’t tell us anything about (which would have influenced peoples advice) why are we wrong to assume you either eat badly or your portions are too big, as you are obese.

Because that's not always the case.

OP posts:
Temporaryname158 · 15/05/2023 14:37

Well what is the reason then? Because if you don’t have a medical condition/take a medication, you are eating too much, be that healthy food in too large a quantity or unhealthy food.

its basic calories in calories out unless as I said you have a medical condition etc

BurbageBrook · 15/05/2023 18:30

38 is really not that old. Your weight could be more of a complicating factor but it sounds like you've had good advice and treatment so far. There's no reason to say you won't have a healthy baby.

RebeccaCloud9 · 15/05/2023 22:20

But you've said you're obese, why are you lolling at assuming you've got a bad diet? I've been there, I'm not judging!

Without going into details I was taking medication whereby I put on a lot of weight. This was making me very hungry.

I've been of that medication for a while and count calories. Weight isn't budging. Everything I put in my mouth was controlled. Unfortunately medication can do this. Also not moving can also do this.

I could've written this exact post 8 months ago.

Had my daughter 2 weeks ago, aged 38, with a very high bmi.

What's done is done, you can't change your weight now and nor should you try.

The aspirin is a good idea, I took a low dose (75mg I think - baby aspirin) daily from start to end. I also was prescribed 5mg folic acid and I took a daily pregnancy vitamin.

Focus now on taking care of yourself. Try to eat as healthily as you can and try to stay as active as you can however DO NOT make any drastic changes.

Trust your body and listen to it.

I'm one for giving good advice but not taking it. I struggled with food aversions throughout so basically ate crap the whole way through, on top of which I have a desk job so was very inactive.

My daughter came at 34 weeks, 2 weeks ago, perfectly healthy. I'm told she came early most likely due to me having an emcs with my first - didn't know this was a thing but i wasn't ever given the impression it was because of my size or being unhealthy.

You will be ok. Take a day at a time and try your best to take care of yourself x

@Temporaryname158 what's the need to come onto a post and kick someone when they are down.
I was going to say if it's not something you would say to someone face, don't hide behind a screen making vile comments. But perhaps that's just who you are...
