Have very very painful spasm type pains in my hips, comes and goes. Can anyone shed some light on what it is, and will it go away. Anyone got any tips on how to make it stop??

Sounds like it could be SPD - I didn't have it but there are quite a few on Mumsnet that have had it/do have it so hopefully one of them will spot this soon to give you some advice

Mummywannabe · 18/02/2008 20:15

thanks winestein - love the name by the way! Just been on an looked up painful hips, said its common and just to support them when sleeping. Just another joy of being pregnant i guess!

Inspired by genius, fuelled by alcohol! (except I don't drink anymore!)

Have a read of this being as no one in the know seems to be around at the mo.

You could also go to "search for messages" and type in SPD int he search for words field - it will probably bring up loads for you to trawl through!

I found this after a cursory look at what a search on SPD brings up. Looks like it might have some useful stuff on it.

Thanks winestein - your a star!

Sounds just like my SPD. My local hospital had special physio sessions for pregnant women with SPD and they were excellent. Maybe your MW would know of something similar....?

Mummywannabe · 18/02/2008 20:47

Thanks mrstittlemouse will ask her when i see her next, or if it unbearable i'll give her a ring, was hoping it might pass!

I would highly recommend that you don't leave it and tell the MW at your next appointment. I was a bit silly and let mine get much worse than it need have been because I didn't go sooner.
As an aside - mine seemed to flare up really badly if I'd swum breast-stroke, and calmed down a lot when I gave up swimming. That wouldn't be the case with you, would it? I loved swimming while pregnant, the weightlessness and the smug feeling that this was what pregnant women are supposed to do () but it wasn't worth the hip pain!

Mummywannabe · 18/02/2008 20:58

sadly no swimming - had car accident last year and hurt shoulder so can't manage it anymore! Not doing well am i really. Could it just be hip pain and not get any worse or is hip pain always a sign of spd? Just looking at best case senario!

I'm not a physio and so not an expert, but your symptoms sound exactly like mine. To be honest, the diagnosis isn't so bad, as once you know what it is, you can use lifestyle changes and simple exercises to keep it under control.
There are severe cases of SPD, which sound awful, but your symptoms would have to be a lot more serious for that!

Mummywannabe · 18/02/2008 21:08

Thanks. Will have a chat about it with midwife. Guess its just you hear so much doom and gloom when pregnant you always expect the worst of everything!

Mummywannabee - have posted on our antenatal thread and it sounds like either SPD or sacro-iliac pain (which is SPD but at the back instead of front) both give you pain which radiates down your hips. As you know this is my third pregnancy, third time I have had it. I asked the exact same question as you on MN with my first as I had never heard of it either. It got me at 15 weeks first time when I asked the MW all she said was "some back pain is common in pregnancy "

I've had physio, exercises and had a support belt TBH nothing much helps well theres things you can do to lessen it. Don't push through the pain, if it hurts rest up. I used to have a bath with lavender oil every night oh and sitting on a birthing ball instead of a chair (she says sitting on a chair )

Mummywannabe · 18/02/2008 21:16

Thanks sweetkitty, just seen your post on antenatal. Was gonna get a birthing ball as thought this might help.
