Are 4d scans safe?

As the title suggests, are 4d scans safe as far as you are aware? Has anyone asked their midwife or another medical professional about them before?

I've read lots of conflicting things about them, and I'm unsure as to whether to have one or not.

All ultrasounds use ultrasound, the 'magic' is the reconstruction of the U/S into a 3 or 4D image.

So 4D is as safe as any other U/S.

There's no proven risk, although I am avoiding any unnecessary scans and just having my NHS medical scans. I'm of the view that if something isn't necessary and has potential risks (however small) then I'd rather not have it.

This is from a literature review from the Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology journal:

"Animal studies suggest that ultrasound may produce adverse effects in the neurological, immunological, hematological, developmental and genetic status of the exposed fetus(1). Thus there is a basis for concern about the safety of humans exposed to diagnostic ultrasound during fetal life. Because no clinically evident immediate adverse effects have been reported in humans, most health professionals and patients consider diagnostic ultrasound in pregnancy to be a safe procedure."

You can read the full review here, where they conclude it appears to be safe: obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/uog.6328

NHS

There are no known risks to the baby or the mother from having an ultrasound scan, but it's important that you consider carefully whether to have the scan or not.
This is because the scan can provide information that may mean you have to make further important decisions. For example, you may be offered further tests, such as amniocentesis, that have a risk of miscarriages.
Some people get so hysterical about things like this but they are safe and fine to have. It isn't necessary to be having scans constantly throughout a pregnancy, but the odd extra scan to produce some keepsake photos will not pose a risk.
