Food anxiety while pregnant

Hi.
I had several miscarriages and hope this time will go ok. Now I found another thing to stress about. Each time I eat something, I overthink it later.
This evening I had some avocado toast. Egg was boiled, yolk not running at all, but the color of the yolk in the middle was a bit more intense and "fudgy". Could it have been undercooked?
I also generally have salads when we go out and now stressing if it wasn't washed properly.
How did you manage to handle the stress and what would be concerning symptoms if I were to catch something...?
Thanks

You can have runny eggs if they are lion stamped as the chickens have been vaccinated.

Avoid salad if it makes you anxious

I don't have any advice at all but just wanted to say this was me and I completely understand.

I had a miscarriage before having my LO and when pregnant with him I had terrible food anxiety. I couldn't eat out or have anyone else cook for me. It caused me a lot of stress and I can see now I really should have got some help cause the stress was probably worse than any food was likely to be.

So maybe worth chatting to your doctor or midwife?

BabyHope1 · 13/05/2023 21:43

Thank you. I checked some older blood tests, I had antibodies for toxoplasmosis and I understand that only the first time is problematic.

So I still have listeria to stress about...

I will speak with Dr next week. Thanks.

You could try reading Emily Oster 'expecting better' which describes the actual numbers, the actual risk and reasons why we are told to avoid things.

Most of the risks are infantismal but people seem to think one bite of the wrong thing will definitely cause issues. It's just not the case!

Not sure if logic will win over anxiety especially with your MC history understandably, but worth a try.

BabyHope1 · 14/05/2023 19:35

@Spottypineapple thank you for the reassurance. I have read about it and it appears it can really cause trouble and there have been very complicated cases. I will try to be more careful and see if I should test for now. Thanks again!

Try to just stick to what the nhs suggests but don’t stress overly about it. If you are finding you anxiety levels are becoming problematic it’s really important you are honest with your midwife as they may refer you to the mental health department before your anxieties spiral out of control. Some anxiety is completely normal in pregnancy but it does sound like yours is becoming a lot higher than normal. Also stay away from google, it is not your friend and a lot on it doesn’t apply to the UK, we have different food standards

@PickledScrump thanks. I hope you are right and I'm just exaggerating.

Please speak to your MW about your fears. They can refer you to MH services to address this anxiety.

Hi, I already have a risk of miscarriage and my husband misread some ready meal instructions and totally undercooked a chicken dish I have just eaten. I am now totally worried this will effect the baby. Does anyone have any advice?

dementedpixie · 14/12/2023 22:13

What sort of ready meal?
Is it not likely to have been meat that was already cooked? Was the food cold or hot?

Bcad85 · 14/12/2023 22:23

A chicken curry. I hadn't eaten it straight away because I was working so thought it was cold in parts because it had sat but turns out it had only cooked for half the time it was meant to. V worried

BabyHope1 · 14/12/2023 22:51

It's very unlikely anything bad has happened. You can ask to test for listeria or sth similar. But if you don't feel ill at all, it should be fine. Fingers crossed

I think you need to consider that a lot of the guidance for food in pregnancy is based on the fact that food poisoning is obviously not ideal for pregnant women

There is nothing specifically in sushi or undercooked egg or rare steak that is heading towards your foetus to hurt it

nothing

nothing at all

if you were not worried of getting food poisoning when not pregnant, you are fine
