Fibroid in Pregnancy

Unic0rnSparkle0405 · 12/05/2023 12:01

Hi 👋

I am 33 weeks pregnant today, first baby. I have a subserosal fibroid covering the opening to my cervix (measuring 70 x 52mm)

The fibroid is blocking the baby's exit. I've been told by the consultant it could move as the pregnancy progresses & my uterus stretches but they won't know until around 37/38 weeks. I have a scan mid June around 37 and a half weeks which feels rather late to find out what the plan is for birth.

It was explained by the consultant I would need a C Section if the fibroid has not moved however this would be tricky because the fibroid is right where they would need to cut and also a C section carries a higher risk of bleeding if the fibroid was to be ruptured, due to this the consultant explained a natural delivery would be safer for me and the baby but of course this won't be possible if the fibroid doesn't move!

I am aware nobody will know the exact answer for my personal situation .. I am just hoping to hear about other people's experiences who have been through similar and how you ended up delivering, as the uncertainty is starting to kick in!

In a similar situation to you. Fibroid not totally covering cervix but mostly. I'm almost 34 weeks and waiting for my next scan date. I have loads and loads of fibroids so c section is a risk but natural option also may not be possible. Ibfeel your worry!

LeafHunter · 12/05/2023 12:06

I had the same. Planned section at 38 weeks. I had a large medical team on hand who were well prepared for any eventualities. Baby is now 5months and was born with no complications. I had fortnightly scans so they had lots of images to use, but also a final scan like you’ll be having just before I turned 38 weeks.

Was it just the one fibroid? I am leaning to planned c section but so worried

Hi 👋
I also had a ‘hostile cervix’ blocked my multiple large fibroids. Was initially given the same advice as you although they suggested a vertical c-section. Had regular scans. Fortunately as hoped, uterus expanded and I was able to have a vaginal delivery 🙂
All the best

@MrsMiagi @LeafHunter @Moonchild79 thank you all so much for your replies! I'm pleased things seem to of gone well. I don't know anybody irl in the same situation so it's nice to be able to reach out on here

@Moonchild79 thanks, this really gives me some hope as I would love to be able to have a natural delivery 🙏 thank you! Smile

I had a huge fibroid when I was pregnant (still have it now) it wasn't obstructing anything for the delivery. I ended up having an emergency c section for other reasons, and I'd have another c section if I were to get pregnant again.
The fibroid wasn't a problem at all.

Glad you weren't affected by your fibroid. Not really the same as our situations as we clearly are and I can tell you its really worrying!

Surely as long as they know location of fibroid they would work around it for a c-section taking extra care? Sorry if I sound naive it's a genuine question!

I've got a fibroid sitting to the right of my cervix and it's never been mentioned as an issue for a section 💜

I am sure they will do their best. I have multiple fibroids so could bleed out wherever I am cut. Wish it was so simple!

PandaOrLion · 13/05/2023 10:27

I also have multiple fibroids and was moved hospitals at about 35weeks because they wanted a stronger obstetrics team doing the section - I was the most severe case the small hospital had had but pretty standard for the big hospital. Don’t be afraid to ask how common this is for them and trust them when they say they know what they’re doing. I had to be within a 30min drive of the hospital from about 35weeks because they had all my scans so it’s worth asking about things like that too.

Thank you for the advice @PandaOrLion - I hope it all went well in the end for you
I have a ultrasound & consultant appt on Monday & will be sure to ask how common this is. My local hospital luckily is quite a large hospital and have a team of experienced obstetricians therefore (I used to work there) it shouldn't be something new for them 🤞🏻

@Moonchild79 Thank you so much! That's so nice of you. I appreciate it

An update from today - the babies head was right on the fibroid which was causing a huge shadow over the area therefore they couldn't make out the fibroids exact location therefore I'm having a rescan end of next week and that scan will decide if I end up with a c section or if he's managed to move his head past the fibroid, I'll be able to deliver naturally (fingers crossed) I'll come on and provide another update once next weeks scan is done! Either way in the end, I will be happiest to go with the safest option x

@Unic0rnSparkle0405 pleasure.

Hope all goes well at the next scan! I know that having a bulky uterus makes sonographers jobs a bit more tricky. Things sound hopeful though and as you said the main outcome is that you and the baby are safe and healthy.

My little boy was resting on one of my fibroids too - I used it call it his little pillow.

Have a restful week.

RoseValleyRambles · 15/05/2023 20:17

Good luck! We were similar, and all they said was that I might end up with a higher incision if the fibroid was in the wrong place for a C sectionwhen the time came. They weren't massively concerned about the repercussions of this .Baby was breech tho, so no question re vaginal birth.

Unic0rnSparkle0405 · 26/05/2023 16:21

Just an update - had a scan today at 35 weeks exactly. Babies head is creating a shadow so they couldn't see the fibroid at all! They aren't actually sure if it's moved or still in the same position, they think it's unlikely it would just disappear therefore waiting for a call from the consultant on Thursday to find out the plan.

Had my scan this week too, 35 weeks. I have opted for a c section. Terrified about the recovery but wanted the hospital to be ready (full team, blood ready) to manage the potential bleeding with me having so many fibroids.
It's all a bit worrying but she has to come out someway!

Thank you so much @Moonchild79 💖 I hope you have a lovely weekend, will certainly keep you updated!

@MrsMiagi I feel the same about the recovery but you will be in very good hands and each day will be an improvement, will 100% need to keep dosed up on painkillers to help the recovery! I think I will end up with a c section too, can't wait to get a date to start getting prepared, we must be due around the same time! 🥰

Hi everyone, I hope you are all keeping well!

Just an update for anyone following the thread still

Good news - I had a scan & consultant appointment today at 37+3. The scan showed the fibroid has moved out of the way, meaning I am now able to try and have a vaginal birth, which was my preference! Smile

I am in the same situation with the fibroid showing to be blocking the cervix at week 20. I am already scheduled to have c-section at week 39 (for another reason) but they explained to me that having the fibroid in this location will make the c-section high risk sue to the risk of heavy bleeding, etc. I am terrified now. The next scan and consultant appointment is in nearly 4 month, week 36. I wonder if I should ask my midwife for a sooner scan?

any updates @MrsMiagi as how your c section went?

Hiya sorry to hear you are in the same boat it is a worrying time.
My c section was amazing. So relaxed! My waters broke early so it technically was an emergency c section. Went into hospital at around 6am, got booked in after the major emergencies and baby was here by lunchtime.
I had a high chance of needing a hysterectomy but didn't have one in the end.
I was so worried beforehand but needn't have been it was all good in the end.
I have since been to my GP to ask about fibroid embolism. I want them gone!!

ai38 · 11/08/2023 14:30

@MrsMiagi I am so glad to hear your c-section went smoothly. One of my worries is the need to have emergency c-section and the hospital not being ready for the complications that may arise. In your case, did they have the full set-up for blood transfusion, etc despite it being an emergency surgery? and may I ask how the recovery has been? I was told that because they need to cut above the fibroid, in a thicker part of the uterus, the recovery might take longer.
