Hello,

I found out a few days ago that I am 5 Weeks pregnant with my first child.. Needless to say, I am over the moon. Although I am already suffering with sickness and bloating.

I am a front line response police officer and have a training course in 2 weeks time for a Family Liason Officer. My question is when do I tell work?
I know that I will get taken off front line straight away, which isn't an issue.. however will my FLO course be taken off me? (Its all office based training and its something that i have been really wantint to do!)
Its still very early days so I don't want the news shared with the rest of my colleagues either.
If I continue how I am (not telling anyone) can shift work put me at risk? I know I'm already at risk of being assaulted etc.

Thanks in advance.

If they took away your FLO course as a result of you telling them that would surely count as discrimination?

sashh · 09/05/2023 04:32

Surely they would keep you on the course as that's a role you could still do while pregnant.

I would tell them ASAP because once you do it kicks in all the maternity rights.

Also as said above, stopping you doing the course would be direct discrimination. If it was training that involved assault courses and self defence it would be different.

I think you should tell them asap. You can still do the course.. I’d be concerned about the risk on the response team so I’d tell them soon as you can. Congratulations! x

Thank you all so much. I didn't even think about discrimination if they did take the course away from me!

Once you have done the FLO training does it have any sort of timescale attached to it regarding refreshing your training? If it did that would be something that I would consider depending upon how much maternity leave you were looking at taking. The other thing that I would think about is that the role of a FLO is quite stressful and usually requires dealing with people who have had the worst experience. Once the course is completed are you straight into supporting people? Do you want to be in that pressure cooker environment whilst pregnant? Don’t underestimate how the additional stress can affect you when pregnant. For the sake of 18/24 months is it worth waiting until you have had your baby?

You can tell them now - they can't take you off the FLO training course and it is an advantage to them to have you trained when you return to work after maternity.

You might not be able to take on any live FLO roles whilst your pregnant is all that will happen.

I'm a nurse so a bit different but still lots of things I couldn't do when pregnant. I told my manager asap, they couldn't protect me or baby if they didn't know and I'd have been absolutely devastated if something happened and I'd been doing things I knew were a risk.
I don't know about the course but I would've thought unless a mandatory part was something considered risky when pregnant then they'd still keep you on? And if it did would you want to put yourself and baby at risk?

Hey OP! I know this is an old thread I just wondered how you got on?
I’ve just found out we are expecting number 2 and do my FLO course at the end of the month which I have been waiting ages for!
thanks :)
