Were you offered induction because of age?

Baby no3 due in a few weeks and I’m just wondering if they are going to start talking about induction as I’ve just turned 40. It was briefly mentioned a while ago as I had DD2 really fast and we live a long way from the hospital but I’m sure someone has told me they don’t let you go past your due date if you’re over 40 and some hospitals like to induce at 39wk. I know you don’t have to agree to it but were you offered induction purely because of your age?? And if so at how many weeks?

I was pregnant at 41, due just after 42nd birthday. Due date was Christmas day. Was told by midwife very early on, possibly first appointment, to expect to be induced on Christmas Eve. However , 12 week scan revealed twins, who were born by elcs at 37 weeks.

I'm 42 and 23 weeks pregnant. To be fair so far I had 2 midwife appointments with second one being quite brief. All I know they will not allow me to go over due date. I have consultant appointment in 2 weeks time so hopefully will know in more details what the plan is. Have you had extra growth scans at 32,36 and one coming at 39 to monitor baby growth and placenta ? I'm due on 1st of September so really hope to give birth at least couple of days earlier.

@Moni81 yes had growth scans all good so far, measuring average size and placenta looking fine 👍

It's also my third, second came day or 2 earlier and she came out quite fast. I'm also worried about it, as I needed medication drip right before delievery and will likely need this time. Then when waters broke baby pressed on my nerves and I wasn't able to move. They had to drag me out of waiting ward bed into wheelchair and rush to delievery room with baby head coming out 😬

I live in an area that not long ago had maternity investigated. Since then induction rates have gone up hugely as the lead tries to over compensate and control every variable by offering inductions for women in so many unnecessary scenarios. Sometimes even increasing risk of women needing further intervention. It's baffling.

Just remember BRAIN as you make your decisions - what are the benefits to me and to baby (not to staff), risks to me and to baby, what are the alternatives, what does my intuition say, what happens if we do nothing for an hour/day/week? Best of luck for a healthy baby and positive delivery!

I was 45y2m when ds was due. He was my only.

But I was fit & healthy, not overweight, had a completely problem free pregnancy. I'd just sat down, 9am on my due date, happy that everything was done and under control when the midwife phoned and said they needed to get me in for a sweep.

I declined, I wasn't overdue, I had no problems, my blood pressure was normal. She got arsey with me and I had to tell her to stop twitching and leave me alone. I really didn't like her.

I didn't want drama or hurrying or fiddling with, I wanted calm. I went into labour at 40+2, ds was born naturally at 40+4.

Hi @Bagofweasels i had my baby at 41 years old. i was told that i'll need to be induced at 40 weeks because of my age. I could have said no but it is my first baby so i just trusted the doctors advice x

Workawayxx · 07/05/2023 21:23

I was 41 and offered an induction at 41 weeks of - not pressured but told sone stats and recommended it. If I was 40 it wouldn’t have been till 42 weeks as it was age 41 and over.

I have feeling it's going to be me pressing them to get baby out as soon as it's safe, theoretically 38 weeks is full term already. I'm generally fit and healthy, not overweight at all but my bump at 23 feels massive and it's getting really uncomfortable, I'm glad I can stop working at 34 weeks due to my holidays. Even though I sit on my bum 8h i need all sort of back support and constantly changing position, luckily at night I can relax and noone sees me with legs up lol.

Bagofweasels · 07/05/2023 21:48

@Moni81 yeah I’ll probably get to the point where I’ll be glad if they offer induction 🤣 I am a bit overweight but not put on any weight during this pregnancy and I don’t think they’d induce me because of that, I think it would be just age. I’m on clexane injections and I was worried about stopping them in time if it’s another super speedy one but they said it’s only an issue if you want an epidural

I had my DD at 41, was induced at EDD due to combination of age and gestational diabetes. I was consultant led and it was discussed early on. Induction actually failed for complicated reasons (long story) and I had spontaneous labour instead but I was happy with induction. The risk of placenta failing was significant enough for me to not want the risk.

@Bagofweasels I'm so scared of epidural, no way I get anything injected in my spine, would rather take labour pain as I did with both my girls. Unless I need caesarian which I hope I will not. I'm on aspirin(age +over 10 years gap since last pregnancy in which case they treat it as first one lol) I believe I need to stop it few weeks before birth as its blood thinner. I noticed my cervix became more sensitive and get odd bleeds when constipated. Will have to mention it to consultant to make sure it's nothing more serious.
