Hi,
I would need to explain to my 3 yrs old son about my growing tummy very soon. He is bright and curious but I think I need a book to help him understand he is going to have a baby brother or sister but he will still be
my special boy, if you know what I mean.Maybe a book his father can read to him. Have you read: there is a house inside my mummy, Is it good?
Any suggestions will be very welcome. Thanks

There's a House... is very sweet. It doesn't explain the technicalities as such, but is a lovely funny story.

would second (third) theres a house inside my mummy.... dd loved it (eventually! was rather suspicious of it at first...!)...
I think there is also a book called Spot's new sister, or something like that, never read it myself, but know it is much loved by others.

Also, the Usborne Book of first experiences (party, doctor, dentist, school, holiday) also includes new baby...

yep, DD loves this too

potxola · 18/02/2008 10:10

Thanks. You are all great.

My four-year old has 'There's a house..' and the Usborne First Experiences baby book, both of which she loves. We also have a factual book which I think is the Usborne Flip Flap Body Book, which explains about babies 9as well as a lot of other stuff about how bodies work). This one might be a step too far on for a 3-year-old, but he might be ready for it!

Oh, and we also have the Little Princess book, 'I want a Sister', which we found good, but I'm not sure if a little boy will identify with the Little Princess

Poledra, thanks. My little boy is his own little man and he may go for the Usboune Body Book as well. Great advice.

I saw this one that might be good.

any recommendations for a more graphic read? DS is 3.5 and is very concerned that baby will get covered in poo when it comes out

whomovedmychocolate · 21/02/2008 18:04

We have two called 'waiting for baby' and 'my new baby' which are just pictures, quite useful for talking through the various bits - although DD is obsessed with the ultrasound page and has been now for several months.

The new baby one is particularly good at pointing out how much better it is to be big sister or brother (e.g. see the baby can't put on his own coat but look at the big brother doing it etc.).

In terms of learning about childbirth, umm, you might have to draw him a picture! DD came out the catflap (em caesarian) so who knows how we explain that one!

There's A House... is great. Also Topsy and Tim and the New Baby, which is nice because it deals very very subtly with the older child being jealous (ie the clues are there in the pictures if you want to talk about them).

LardyMardyDaisyBoo · 21/02/2008 18:14

oh, we had There's a house... too. It is really sweet.

It's by the Purple Ronnie team.

Another vote for My Family is getting bigger.

It's sort of an activity book rather just a reading book.
