Taking over the counter iron tablets with prenatals?

Currently 28 weeks pregnant and I have iron as ferrous fumurate 28mg in my prenatal tablets.
I want to take 20mg of iron bisglycinate with my prenatals but different hours.
my blood tests for iron are borderline and I feel like the NHS won’t prescribe iron tablets unless it’s below the range.
Before pregnancy iron bishlycinate increased my levels a lot but I’m not seeing an increase just taking the iron in my prenatal.
would taking 48mg be a lot in a day?

The iron in your prenatal will barely be doing anything, bisglycinate is a excellent form to take if you need to.

Just check online for daily iron recommendation.

Remember if your iron is only borderline at 28 weeks then don't worry too much, it is totally natural for iron to be lower in third trimester as your blood volume has increased so significantly that it dilutes the level of iron in your blood.

Also, are you just going off standard haemoglobin blood test or have you had an iron profile done?

Thank you for your kind reply.
So the NHS did a blood test on the 10th of March so that was a while back. It stated iron as 15 and HB was as 112.

I did a private blood test a week after the NHS one on the 17th March and my Haemoglobin was 114, iron binding satn. was 19 and ferritin was 30.

i also have beta thallasemia so my haemoglobin is always kinda low but thats why i check my ferritin levels.
As im in my 3rd trimester ive been feeling a little weak and dizzy and my only explanation is my iron must be low.

In 2 weeks the nhs will repeat the iron tests and vitamins as im in my third trimester.
Do you think i should wait until then or start taking the extra 20mg iron bisglycinate along with my prenatals?

Also online in the uk it says, You need at least 27 mg of iron, but try not to get more than 45 mg each day during your pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

my prenatal has 28mg and the iron bisglycinate is 20mg

Hi I had to take ferrous fumerate in my third trimester when pregnant with DS - I continued to take my prenatal too as my midwife said that your body gets rid of any extra iron it doesn’t need.

Also I better add that I only took the ferrous fumerate 3 times a week

Thank you, may i ask the iron dose in your prenatal and the extra dose you took.

I would take that, but that's my personal opinion and obviously not medical advice!

I just think that the absorption from the iron in your prenatal is going to be lacklustre so doubt would will be getting the full 48g anyway.

I would start now so you know if it's making a difference at your next blood test.
