That says it all really.

I'm 28 weeks.
I usually suffer from allergic rhinitis. Tried piriton. Not helping much.
No other symptoms. Just this bloody blocked nose that keeps me from sleeping.
It's worse for lying down.
I can't possibly get up 3 times a night to faff around with steam inhalations!!
During the day, it clears up a bit but no smell, no taste.

What can I do ????????????????????????

Please help.

I got told by my gyny docs, to continue with nasal sprays for my allergic rhinitus. He said although no research that it is harmless, no reason why the topical nasal sprays should do any harm. I have been using them to help me sleep some nights, and it makes a big difference. Were you on nasal sprays before you were pg?

CeylonSapphire · 18/02/2008 10:03

I've been suffering big time from this for the last 5-6 weeks (am now 33+3). Dr gave me Beconase in a nasal spray. So long as I use it every 12 hours, it works. If I miss a dose, I get all stuffed up again.

slim22 · 18/02/2008 10:30

Hi rainbow. I've been using nasonex/fluctinasole (which is same as beconase I think) or simply sinex rhinitis

I have to admit I did surrender a couple of nights ago. Just not sure if I can go on...

Thanks ladies, my ob gyn said Ok if desperate for relief

Do you know how long we can go on?

ceylonsapphire, nice name

Thanks for the compliment!

As far as I know, I was told to just keep taking the spray as long as I needed it. My Dr didn't seem to think it would have any adverse effect on the baby...

I just can't wait for this baby to arrive now, and I can have my lovely clear nose back! (Neither can my dh!)

slim22 · 18/02/2008 12:30

oh thanks!!!

You're lucky - not only am I completely bunged up every night I also get terrible nosebleeds when I blow my nose too hard!!!

rainbowdays · 18/02/2008 14:26

I must be lucky as being pg has actually been less of a problem for me this time around, but I am just using the nasal sprays whenever I need them at night. I seem to have a few days of needing them and then a few days not. But like CeylonSapphire, I am now 33 weeks and hoping that this baby will arrive early in the next 5 weeks.

I also spend some nights sleeping propped up, helps the nose and the gastric reflux!!!! Oh the joys of pregnancy.

slim22 - I think you should use them when you need to, it will probrably not get any better as the pg progresses.

Amberc - I was told not to blow my nose hard precisely because pg woment are more prone to nosebleeds. Are you using nasal sprays too?

Amberc · 18/02/2008 18:11

Nasal sprays gave me nosebleeds before I was pregnant - I must just have a very sensitive hooter

ThePFJ · 18/02/2008 19:30

I find a change in temp helps. If I go outside for a while and come back in it unblocks, or if I splash cold water on the bridge of my nose and then warm it helps too. Other than that, try to stay calm. The more I try to blow my nose the worse it gets. I think checking with doc for some nasel spray could be good, as my vicks inhaler thingie doesnt even touch my nose blocks now.
Oh and a warm bath helps mine too. The humid air helps the passages unblock apparently.
I get very blocked nose and nose bleeds, so I know exactly how you are feeling. (34 weeks now... only 6 weeks to go!!)

Amberc · 19/02/2008 15:12

How about trying a humidifier?

slim22 · 20/02/2008 00:32

I've always had a humidifier, but we now live in Asia. It gets so hot, we can't live without air conditioning....which surely makes things worse for me as it dries the air!

It's a constant fight during the night. DH turning aircon on/me off. Comical really.

Anyway, it is getting a bit better. Maybe I just got used to it.
I only used the spray 2 nights and caught up on much needed sleep. I'm too paranoid to carry on. But will have some if need rest.

thanks again for all your kind responses.

slim, i did use a beconase nasal spray throughout preg with dd1. i has severe hayfever and the usual stuffy nose. didn't think to tell you that yesterday. it's the only thing the gp told me was ok to take.

i'd say take it. on balance you are doing much more for your baby by feeling well! and calm!!

any luck with the homeopathy hunt?

Egypt · 20/02/2008 00:37

they've got humidifiers in homefix. dr suggested that for dd2

slim22 · 20/02/2008 01:22

Can you running air con with humidifier at the same time?????

No luck with homeopath. I'm going to call my Ob-gyn and ask.

Yuk I've got to go and do the glucose test.
