are there any restrictions as to what you can and can't eat when breastfeeding as there are when preggers? I feel like I am going to go mad if I don't eat baked camembert soon and have planned a feast of toxicity (well cheese, pate etc) as soon as I have given birth (will be in my labour bag with a bag of champers). No idea and can' find any info on the net.

I too was missing cheese terribly! Once I had given birth I got DH to bring me in brie and crackers and I sat on the post-natal ward and munched away.

pasteurised brie sold in Sainsbury's (Somerset made?)

it is important that you eat lots of chocolate while bfing. 'Tis good for the baby

i thought that you could eat baked camembert when pregnant i thought the cooking killed the bacteria

Speaking of checking over the counter drugs I recently noticed on the leaflet that came with my germolene that I should check with my GP before using it if breastfeeding .
You know, I wouldn't normally say this but I think I'll take the risk

My ds had very bad wind when he was under 4 months so I used to cut down on cruciferous veg like cauliflower and brocolli and other veg like onions. I ate them like mad after about 4 months though with no problems and he loves them all himself now. Still partially bf at 10.5 months so no probs with any food now.

Other than that I just cut our caffeine and alcohol until I started to wean him then I had them in moderation.

The only painkiller I think is safe is paracetamol so things like Lemsip etc are o.k. as far as I know.

I ate everything until DD told me she didn't like it - the only things she reacted to were Coke (cola, obviously...) and cabbage/sprouts, which gave her very painful wind and explosive nappies. And did try and drink wine after a feed to give it a few hours to process before the next one.

I didn't avoid anything foodwise. I think some babies may react to some foods, but I suppose it all depends on the baby. The only reason I really avoided alcohol in the early days was because I usually ended up with baby in bed with me at some point during the night and didn't want to have drunk anything - rather than being worried about alcohol passing on to the baby. Also avoided caffeine later in the day when they were tiny.

EffiePerine · 18/02/2008 12:53

I found that DS ( a v colicky baby) did react to certain foods, including coffee, chilli and chocolate . I'd wait and see though, as most babies are completely unfussed.

Lulumama and Brangeline, re curry, I have just checked with a friend in India - she says "OF COURSE Indian women avoid spicy food while pregnant and nursing! I scoffed at the idea until I had a spicy curry when DS was breastfeeding and he got a horrible diaper rash by the next morning." So I think aromatic and spicy would be OK but not actually hot hot. I definitely made Indian food when I was BF and DS was fine but I don't really use chili anyway so my curries are never hot.
