Haematoma experiences please

I had a very big bleed yesterday (12+5), went to a&e and they told me to expect the worst.

I had my dating scan today. Baby was absolutely fine. They did say I have a 5cm haematoma which is likely to be what caused the bleed.

Can anyone that has had these share experiences please? I let them know I have a fairly active job (4 ish hours of walking per day) plus running around after my child. I was expecting them to advise to take a couple of weeks off work and rest but they just said not to do anything strenuous.
I'm self employed so taking time off is not as easy as it could be but I am fully prepared to do this.

I just wondered what other people had experienced? Google has some horror stories so I'm keen to try and stay off of that if I can...

I had a subchorionic haematoma with a big bleed at 7 weeks, and then nothing after that. By 14 weeks it was gone from the scans. I was prescribed progesterone probably more to do with the fact that I had a miscarriage 2 months before that pregnancy and then the haematoma. Nothing advised in terms of rest, there wouldn’t be any point it doesn’t affect it.

yep! I had a big bleed at 13 weeks. Had bed rest for a week then returned to normal but doing nothing strenuous (like working out etc). I had a 1 year old at the time so had to run around after her. I continued to bleed until 24 weeks and the haematoma never went. I think it measured around 7x12cm. I had to have my daughter induced at 37 weeks as a precaution because I was told I was more likely to have a placental abruption (but that might have been due to problems with my previous pregnancy). My daughter was born 8 years ago and was a strong healthy baby and it had no effect on her whatsoever. It’s so hard though and I struggled mentally a lot but they are pretty common and most pregnancies continue with no problems. Good luck

Thank you both for your replies. I am wondering if I should postpone all of my work next week (Tues - Fri) as a precaution. I have told DH I will be resting today through to the bank holiday.

I had a big bleed (I was getting out of the car and gushed everywhere) at about 13 weeks and after my 12 week scan. Fortunately it was just before Christmas so I wasn’t working but despite the GP saying it wouldn’t make a difference I did take it easy while feeling very anxious. I had another scan in the new year and the baby was fine but went on to have another smaller bleed. The hospital said there was no reason to do another scan which I took as a sign of confidence that the baby would be ok. The post big bleed scan showed the baby lying on the haematoma like a hammock.

By the 20 week scan there was no sign of it and I was told it had reabsorbed.

The rest of my pregnancy continued normally and my baby was born 2 weeks after his due date weighing 9’11. He’s now a strapping 6’4 and 21 in the summer!

Try not to worry - easier said than done I know.

Thank you so much for sharing this. It sounds similar to my timeline, I measured 13+2 today at my 12w scan and when the bleed occurred yesterday it was gushing. I've never had anything like that happen.
I'm hoping that it has been reabsorbed by 20 weeks. The sonographer didn't say where it was in relation to placenta etc today so I am a bit worried. It is just off to the side of baby. I reckon they kicked it!

I may book a private scan in between now and 20 weeks.

I had this with both pregnancies. Heavy bleeds a few times. They are 13 & 10 now! Good luck 🥰

I'm glad your babies were OK! Thank you for sharing

I had them in both pregnancies, huge bleeds and similar to you at around 12 weeks was told in hospital to expect the worst. But all ended up ok, mine measured 10cm at 13 weeks, I kept bleeding until a week before my 20 week scan, and by then it wasn't visible on the scan. Second pregnancy the bleeding started much earlier, and resolved by about 16 weeks. I did find I bled more when I was more active/walked a lot, so tried to take it as easy as I could. Good luck x

Mine was earlier at 7 weeks and some odd days and classed as a large haematoma so I was put on bed rest, no lifting my toddler, no walking, no sex, no orgasms, basically rest until my 20 week scan. I had lost a lot of blood though with massive clots so I am not sure if that had anything to do with the bed rest bit. It also might have been the position of the haematoma too in relation to the placenta. It was 20 years ago.

If you read the medical journals online they do prescribe a reduction in activity as to how far you take that, it is up to you but personally I would as a precaution.

Vikingthings · 04/05/2023 22:49

I will be reducing activity partially next week (can't go on total bed rest but I can take it easier in some respects and try and get help with my daughter). I am really hoping it is gone by 20 weeks. I was so excited to tell people after 12 weeks and now I'm not ready at all.

I should add, DH is home all Bank Holiday weekend and we have agreed I'll be resting for most of that.
