Food aversion in early pregnancy

I just found out this week that I’m pregnant (for the first time).

I’m 4 weeks, 5 days today and have pretty much no interest in food. I didn’t expect any symptoms so early but this started at the beginning of the week. I have a strange taste in my mouth as well so maybe that’s just making food seem unappealing.

The only thing I’ve actually wanted to eat today has been fruit which I suppose is good because I’m getting some nutrients in.

Did anyone else feel like this? It’s so weird to me as I’m normally hungry all the time and not at all fussy about food.

Yes I'm still like it at 10 weeks. I have every time I open the fridge door and I can smell the food. Mainly living on carbs. Normally love chicken and fish and can't even look at them x

Definitely! So much made me feel sick! I think it’s totally normal, but for most it does settle down later in pregnancy (sometimes with a few lingering aversions). I couldn’t go near eggs and never quite got over that. I have to talk myself into it, but if the smell catches me unawares I still retch occasionally. I’m usually someone who lives on fruit and veg, but could only stomach white bread and occasionally potato or hash browns. Weirdest feeling.

It's my first symptom! Massive aversions, mainly to meat and caffeine, and only want unripe fruit.

Lightningrain · 04/05/2023 13:58

Oh no, I hope I don’t have a lingering aversion to a food I really love!

It surprised me that it was so early but it seems others have had the same experience. I hope it’s not a sign of worse symptoms to come.

I know someone that still can’t eat plain chicken 4 years after going off meat during pregnancy. Strangely she’s fine if it’s flavoured or breaded chicken.

@VikingLady I barely managed a quarter of a cup of coffee this morning. I don’t think I’ll be making another!

My food aversions got a lot better at 12-13 weeks. I couldn’t eat anything with too much flavour or smell. But at the weekend I went out for a curry, so it doesn’t last forever.

Lillybobs86 · 04/05/2023 16:37

I have had this for a few weeks and I am 9 weeks now.
I am surviving on just carbs!
Which I normally wouldn't eat like that however it's the only thing I can stomach.
Coffee, meat and anything too strong smelling I can't cope with 🙈

Hopefully it won’t last too much longer then. It seems more common than I thought having done a bit of reading up today.

Most pregnant ladies I’ve known have been starving all the time and using the ‘eating for two’ excuse. Maybe that comes later on.

At least it's easy to follow nhs advice about cutting down caffeine!
