Really regretting having that early pregnancy scan!! :(

So I had an early pregnancy scan today at one of those private places. There was a strong heartbeat, which was positive. The Sonographer put me on 7 weeks, but I should be 7 weeks and 4 days.

What really, really worried me is this though. She asked:"Any bleeding or pain?" I said no, as I haven't had any vaginal bleeding and no pain.

She then proceeded to say: "You have a bit of bleeding, but that's very common in early pregnancy".

Basically she could see bleeding on the scan.

I know she said it is common, but I am now really worried. I didn't have any bleeding showing on the scans, when I had my son and my daughter

Does anyone have any advice? I am so worried :(((

Like she said, it's very common and not indicative of anything untoward.

RunningFromInsanity · 29/04/2023 17:10

If you can’t trust the highly qualified medical professional then why would you trust complete strangers on the internet?

FairAcre · 29/04/2023 17:33

These scans at private clinics are often not very accurate and sometimes the sonographer isn't even well-qualified. The one near us has very bad reviews and often are quite a few days out with the dates. They can cause more stress than reassurance.

TeaKitten · 29/04/2023 17:37

It’s really common and is often gone by your 12 week scan, it doesn’t mean your pregnancy is in danger.

Gr8tfulmumof2x · 29/04/2023 17:40

Bleeding is super common during early pregnancy. I had some light pink. Didn’t amount to anything. I also had an early scan and it was meant to be 7 weeks and 6 days and I was dated 6 weeks 6 days. Went for my 12 week scan and the date I originally had was correct. Try not to worry! Things will get easier! 💐

Itsrainingheree · 29/04/2023 17:41

Thanks everyone for your reassurance. I suppose the fact that I haven't got any vaginal bleeding and no spotting is positive. Fingers crossed that everything will be okay. I wish I hadn't gone now, because then I wouldn't worry. But what's done is done, I suppose.

I had a haematoma present in 2 pregnancies. The place I got a scan didn't even tell me but wrote it on the notes in very hard to read writing. It wasn't until I had a massive bleed I realised what it said. He's now 6. Also at 7 weeks pregnant the difference in measurement is literally millimeters so totally normal to be a bit out.

Infact the only pregnancy I have not had a visible blood on the early scan was the one I miscarried.

Once you have seen a heartbeat your changes of miscarriage become much lower. Today you are pregnant and you have seen the heartbeat and baby is growing.

Marmunia10661975 · 29/04/2023 17:47

Yes, absolutely common! I was standing chatting to DH on the phone, hung up and suddenly had a warm gush of red blood. Lasted until the next day and was completely fine!

Lahdydah · 29/04/2023 17:47

Different scan machines will give different dates

LaForza101 · 29/04/2023 18:15

I had early scans because of recurrent miscarriage and they found a bleed on a 7 week scan. I freaked out of course but the bleed was reabsorbed without any vaginal bleeding by the time of my next scan a couple of weeks later. The pregnancy was successful and I'm cradling the resulting baby as I type!

Hopefully it will resolve itself and you wouldn't have noticed without the scan. Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy!

Colourmerainbow · 29/04/2023 23:37

I had early scans in both pregnancies as I did have some bleeding. Like you it could be seen on the scan. Both times by 12 weeks it had disappeared.

Blue2020 · 30/04/2023 06:06

In terms of the measurement that early I think up to 5 days out is normal due to how tiny it is. I had one at 9weeks and they put me 3days behind my date (I tracked ovulation). By the 12week scan it was ahead, and I have since had my little boy.

In terms of the bleeding I don’t have much experience, I will leave that to others to comment.

@Itsrainingheree The sonographer a at these places are usually not highly or medically qualified. However, I think what they should have done is contact your local EPU and arrange for you to be seen there. I’m saying this from personal experience of having these scans myself in my earlier pregnancies. The procedure at the two places I went to (window to the womb, and another in Mothercare) was that anything like bleeding or irregularities or anything that needed a medical opinion was referred to your local EPU who
would then arrange a scan in hospital so you could get proper qualified medical advice. I would call them back and ask them to do this for you.

Like other posters have said, it’s really common in pregnancy and not necessarily a sign of anything sinister, but these places are not medically qualified and if they see anything that needs a medical opinion they have a duty of care to refer you on. It’s most likely nothing to worry about but a proper check will at least give you peace of mind x

Agree. The BBC did a documentary on these baby clinics and uncovered a wide range of problems including reading scans inaccurately and not referring to NHS to follow up on potential problems.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 30/04/2023 06:53

This board is full of women who just get more stressed by these scans. In most cases it seems to be they go in too early and then panic at there being no heartbeat. They spend a week so stressed and then do another scan to find everything normal.

I’d try not to worry but maybe mention it to your midwife to see if there’s anything they have to say or can do.

I went to Window to The Womb yesterday. Maybe they didn't refer me to EPU because I'm so early on in my pregnancy?

It's reassuring to hear from so many women here where the bleeding was just reabsorbed by the body and that bleeding is quite normal.

However, if anything was to go wrong, nothing could be done to save the baby anyway at this point. My baby is the size of a blueberry at the moment 😣

I have just called Window to the Womb and they said they just refer to EPU if the bleeding is inside the pregnancy sac and could affect the pregnancy. If the bleeding is outside the sac, it will either absorb or leave the vagina through spotting and it's not really affecting the pregnancy, so they are not referring for that. She said it's basically like a bruise that a lot of women have.

Hi lovely! My name is Lucja and I’m a clinical assistant at Ultrasound Direct, a leading National ultrasound provider with all our sonographer’s medically qualified (I didn’t want to worry you after I noticed people’s discussion about the credibility of private ultrasound companies). Like so many ladies have already said from their own expierence it is very common to have bleeds outside of the gestation sac in early pregnancy and most get reabsorbed by your body or leave via the vagina by the time you go to your 12 week scan. I know it can be very stressful hearing it, particularly if you haven’t heard about it before.
Regarding your dates, at this point practitioners use your LMP (last menstrual period) date to give a rough estimate which is your 7 weeks and 4 days. At the scan they measure the CRL (crown to rump length) which means from the top of the head to the bottom of the bum. This would be the 7 weeks measurement. It’s nothing concerning that it doesn’t match up perfectly and most people see the same thing. Remember that your little one is so small at this stage that measurements taken on a scan can also be out by about 6 days on either side.
congratulations on your little one! :)
I hope I’ve provided you some reassurance🤗

Thank you for replying on my thread, it's very helpful. It's good to know that all of your sonographers are medically qualified xx
