Metformin and Cyclogest (Progesterone)

Hello all!

I was wondering if anyone out there has used both Metformin and Cyclogest (progesterone) together in their first trimester of pregnancy? Plus Inofolic Alpha!

I have been taking Metformin and Inofolic Alpha as prescribed by the fertility nurse for my PCOS and I am now just shy of 6 weeks pregnant.

As I have had two previous miscarriages, the fertility nurse has prescribed me Cyclogest pessaries up to 16 weeks, but I wanted to ask if anyone has taken these whilst taking Metformin as well?

I’d read that taking Metformin up to 12 weeks can have a positive effect at reducing miscarriage but I can’t find anything online to say if it’s safe to be taking both together. When I asked the nurse about coming off Metformin a few months ago, she didn’t have a definitive answer and just said I could come off it when I get pregnant.

Thank you so much for your help, am just trying to make sure I do everything right this time 🙏🏻🌈

I did yes. My consultant knew what I was taking and didn't say they couldn't be taken together (he encouraged me to take both)

@ratherbthedevil thanks so much for getting back to me! That’s very reassuring to hear. And if you don’t mind me asking, did all go well with your pregnancy? It will be nice to hear some reassuring success stories ❤️ How long did you take both the Metformin and Cyclogest for?

I'm still pregnant, due in a few weeks.

I carried on taking the metformin throughout as I got gestational diabetes so it helps to keep my levels down. My consultant said not to stop the metformin but didn't give me an end date. Tbh I have GD in all my pregnancies so maybe he just knew I'd be on it throughout anyway.

I stopped the Cyclogest maybe about 10/12 weeks. I think they wanted me to take it to 14 weeks but I kept forgetting and had my 12 week scan which was fine so I just never took them again.

Thank you for letting me know @ratherbthedevil, that’s really reassuring to hear, and congratulations! 🧡 I bet you can’t wait to meet him or her now.

I'm taking metformin (1.5g) and cyclogest. Nearly 13 weeks.

seven201 · 01/05/2023 19:50

I was initially on 3g but had to stop for 5 weeks (as my b12 went too low) then went back on and was meant to go back to 3g but a different dr said 1.5g would be fine. I have pcos and had gestational diabetes with my first child. My BMI is 25 so I don't really know why I was put on such a high dose. I was told when it's time for the gestational diabetes test I'll have to stop the metofmin (I think they said for a week before) then resume after. Not great as I had awful constipation when I stopped it last time!

Sorry @seven201, I didn’t get a notification of your posts so I’ve only just seen them! Thanks so much for getting back to me. Gosh, that’s a lot of changing doses for you! But at least they are keeping a close eye and making sure you’re on the right dose. Have you been told to take the Cyclogest up to 16 weeks? That’s what I’ve been told.

@mrsalice2022 yes, cyclogest until 16 weeks. I think some places stop from 12 but I'm happier with the 16.

mrsalice2022 · 04/05/2023 12:27

Me too! Wishing you a wonderful pregnancy 😊🧡

I was taking Metformin to reduce my testosterone so I didn’t come off it until I was 14 weeks due to previous miscarriage. I was also taking progesterone at the same time and continued with that until 28 weeks. No issue taking both together.

seven201 · 04/05/2023 17:02

What dose metformin is/was everyone on please?

mrsalice2022 · 04/05/2023 17:20

It is so reassuring to hear from you all, thank you. I couldn’t find anything online to say if it was ok to take both! I take 2 x 500mg Metformin tablets a day.

Thank you for the info @mrsalice2022

I went for my first midwife appointment yesterday and there was sugar in my urine so I’ve been sent for further blood tests to check on my glucose. I’ve now scared myself by reading up online as to the effects this could have on the baby. As you are all on Metformin, I wondered if you too had sugar in your urine?

@mrsalice2022 it's an indicator of gestational diabetes so you'll probably be sent for a test (blood test after drinking a sugary drink they give you). I had gestational diabetes with my dd, but a very late diagnosis (as I had other complications and they forgot to refer me for the test). Mine was diet controlled but I only had to do it for one week before c-section. Dd was fine, I was fine.

mrsalice2022 · 18/05/2023 13:26

Ok thank you. From what I’ve read, it’s particularly dangerous if you have it so early on in pregnancy, so I’m now tearing my hair out that my PCOS has already caused issues to the baby.

I had a friend who had a high urine sugar result after eating a slice of cake, then a clear gestational diabetes test. Purely anecdotal though.

seven201 · 18/05/2023 15:40

Also, I was told to stop metformin a week or two before my gd test, so it was a true test. So maybe ask about that.

mrsalice2022 · 18/05/2023 20:35

Thank you for your advice @seven201 . I guess I need to be patient and wait for the blood test result now. Hard to be after two previous losses!
