Can I go in the hot tub for short periods?

Hey,

I'm going away in a few weeks and there'll be a hot tub. I'll be 24 weeks pregnant at the time and I'm wondering if it'll be okay to pop in in short bursts? I've read mixed opinions and don't have another midwife app until 28 weeks.

Thanks :)

I wouldn't.
Why not ask your midwife?

PinkPlantCase · 28/04/2023 14:48

I don’t really know why you’d risk it. Or tbh book somewhere that has a hot tub when you know you can’t use it.

I guess you could sit on the side and have your feet in.

I went in a hot tub one evening when I was around 5-6 months pregnant (it was my hen night, couldn't go out as no drinking, my mum had a hot tub in the garden so had a few friends round for snacks/hot tub/movie)

No longer than 10 minutes a time and no more than twice, also had the temperature lowered a little.

I was fine, but I'm not advising you to do so or not, its personal choice after all 😊

greenacrylicpaint · 28/04/2023 14:54

no.
not because of the hot water but because of the infection risk.

ShirleyPhallus · 28/04/2023 15:00

I have a hot tub and went in it all through pregnancy

however we keep it at 37-38 degrees and clean / maintain it properly ourselves

I wouldn’t be going in one that was hotter and there was potential infection risk

BendingSpoons · 28/04/2023 15:04

I went in a hot tub when pregnant. From what I read the main risk was overheating and feeling faint so I was careful to avoid this, alternating sitting fully in it and just having my feet in.

mathanxiety · 28/04/2023 15:20

There are risks associated with hot tubs in pregnancy.

Why would you want to take those risks?

justsayingthat · 28/04/2023 19:42

I wouldn't.

Someone said to me (when I was pregnant) that hot tubs when pregnant were the equivalent of 'boil in a bag rice'... Obviously, not a scientific/ medical quote, but couldn't get that thought out of my head, so avoided them!

PickledScrump · 28/04/2023 20:10

I wouldn’t. It’s really not worth the risk.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/04/2023 20:19

No. Not worth the risk esp as it's a mixed /shared one

Maybe if own and knew the cleanliness and chemicals etx

Skyla01 · 28/04/2023 20:19

I imagine OP booked her trip before knowing she was pregnant.

I have a pre-booked trip in a few weeks, the place we are staying has a hot tub. I think I might try it for short bursts but either turn the temperature down, or mostly sit with just my feet in. The main risks are due to overheating, so don't stay in too long.

marshmallowsforbreakfast · 28/04/2023 20:22

I just dangled my feet in. Used it as more of a large foot spa.

HowManySunflowers · 28/04/2023 20:22

The risk is due to infection as well as overheating, so short periods won't help much.

TheChosenTwo · 28/04/2023 20:25

I had hot baths throughout my pregnancies (although not as hot as dh runs me one, they’re not scalding!), I think the risk is largely down to overheating/dehydrating/blood pressure.
I have a hot tub in my garden now but not pregnant! If I were I’d drop the temperature and still go in.
Your choice, sitting on the edge with your legs in might be a compromise.

DyslexicPoster · 28/04/2023 20:31

Check with midwife but really it's a no. It increases blood pressure. However going in for 5 minutes spaced out, putting your legs in I have done. You will need to make sure it's turned down too. How much cooler I don't know

Sallyh87 · 28/04/2023 22:22

Sitting on the side with legs in is quite nice!

Gr8tfulmumof2x · 28/04/2023 22:38

I did twice!

no harm to baby. I didn’t sit near the jets and drank plenty of water and did 10 mins and then 10mins out!

xx

PotKettel · 28/04/2023 22:40

I wouldn’t personally take the risk, might dangle my feet in!

DingsBum · 28/04/2023 22:42

I had hotter baths when pregnant so I don't get why hot tubs are an overheating risk.

Are they higher infection risk than a swimming pool? Genuine question...!!

HowManySunflowers · 28/04/2023 22:50

Yes, because bacteria multiply more at the warmer temperature.

They stay at a constant temp whereas a bath cools over time
