Waters have broken, nervous first time mum

Hello everyone, I am 39+ 3 and my waters spectacularly went on the bathroom floor this morning at 7:40, no pain or contractions yet.

Just got home from the hospital, everything is fine and have been booked in for an induction first thing tomorrow if things don't naturally get moving today/tonight.

Does anyone have any experience of things progressing naturally after waters breaking was the first sign of labour? I really don't fancy an induction, but what will be will be I guess ☺️

It happened to me when I had my son and I ended up having to be induced but once things got going it was quick. 3 hours from 1st contractions to him in my arms. 1st baby. Was a fairly good experience apart from the fact it happened so quickly they didn't believe I was in labour....

I am a midwife now and it is estimated that 60% of women will go into labour within 24 hours of their waters going. Keep an eye on movements and the colour of the waters. Contact your maternity unit if you have any concerns or feel unwell at all.

You need to get your oxytocin flowing. If you are planning on breastfeeding, try nipple stimulation and you can collect colostrum at the same time. You can try orgasms (NOTHING inside the vagina now), some skin to skin with your partner, bounce on your ball if you have one and watch something that makes you laugh. Draw all your curtains, make it dark. Make yourself a nest. Eat well and drink to thirst. Don't overdo water, drink isotonic drinks too. Then if nothing starts by bedtime just get a good night sleep as tomorrow will be a busy day one way or another.

Good luck! Let us know how you get on!

I also had the spectacular breaking of waters in the bathroom. It was another 24 hours before contractions started in earnest. In the meantime I went to the hairdressers as I’d planned for that day then walked to Asda. The hairdresser wasn’t impressed when I told her my waters had already broken, i think she was scared of a TV speed birth in the salon.
Good luck OP.

I did this too. Got my hair and eyebrows done. Went to visit my mum. Took some last photos of my bump. Went out for our last child free meal for a while. Was quite a bizarre feeling!

All the best OP. I was a nervous first time mum 18 months ago, all totally worth it! You’ll have him in your arms in no time 💛

@rebecca100 how did it go? Hope you're ok x

rebecca100 · 30/04/2023 17:15

@summerlovingvibes been in hospital since 8:30am yesterday. Gave birth to a healthy baby boy at 13:24 today weighing 7lb 9oz via forceps. He is a little bashed up from the process unfortunately, but he's arrived safely and that's what matters xx

Oh congratulations! I'm glad that he arrived safely ... one way or another and now just time for Mumma and baby to recover and relax. Take care and enjoy your wonderful newborn :) I already miss the newborn cuddles and I'm only a few months down the line!
