35 weeks pregnant and losing my mucus plug

Hi all,
I am 35 weeks pregnant today, with my second child and have been slowly losing my plug since yesterday. I have had quite a big clump come out yesterday and then most times I go to the toilet more is coming away. There is no blood in the plug (sorry TMI!) Last night I had really strong contractions which lasted on and off for about 30 mins, where I was unable to talk but then it all stopped. I haven’t had anything else since then, except for some mild back pain. I was also examined yesterday and been told my cervix is still long (28mm) Has anyone experienced this before? I’m convinced I will go in to preterm labour because all of a sudden I feel completely tired, unable to stay awake and suffering with bad heartburn (which I haven’t had through my whole pregnancy). I just wanted to know other peoples experiences, I was induced with my first child so not sure what to expect with a spontaneous labour.

thanks xx

Hello! I gave birth to first in September at exactly 35 weeks so hopefully this might help?

I'd been experiencing (what I thought was) a mild stomach ache all day, that was slowly getting worse, but no other symptoms. Went in to hospital at lunch time where baby was monitored and I was examined and the doctor determined that baby was fine and I was definitely not in labour (cervix still very much closed etc) so they just told me to go home without giving me a reason for the pain, which bothered me. Pain became so strong, then noticed a small amount of blood and mucus when I went to the loo, back to the hospital that evening and by the time I'd been examined by a doctor I was 10cm dilated and baby arrived 20 minutes later.

Trust your gut, go back to the hospital and ask to be examined again if you feel you need to! Hope everything goes well x

Thank you for sharing that! Was baby okay being born at 35 weeks? I think that’s what I’m panicking about, is not being able to spend the first few days with him incase he needs to spend time in NICU x

Try not to worry (easier said than done!). The mucous plug can actually regenerate- so you may lose some of it but it'll replace itself. Contractions at this time are mostly normal (I had them from 20 weeks which was a JOY 😜) so went in for monitoring often and they were all completely unproductive, they were so very painful but I had an irritable uterus.
That said, ALWAYS go in to be checked if something doesn't feel right, even if that's every day. You can't be too careful and if that means you need to be reassured with checks and monitoring daily then so be it.

No problem!

He was slightly jaundiced so we had a 4 night stay on the standard maternity ward, but other than that he was perfectly healthy and 6lb 4oz so no time in the nicu thankfully :) x

I lost my mucus plug at 32 weeks + 3 days and I’m currently 38 weeks and still pregnant. I lost it again at 37 weeks and midwife said that it can regenerate and some people can lose theirs a few times from 6 months pregnant?

Again, I’ve had on and off contractions for weeks and still nothing happening. Cervix is 1cm but still thick and firm.

I 100% understand your worries and I do think if you get any contractions again then definitely go to Maternity Unit.
