Suspected placenta accreta

I am extremely scared, I am being referred to Addenbrooks hospital to see if I have placenta accreta due to an anterior and low placenta.
I don’t mind having another c section but what I really don’t want to happen is a hysterectomy.
I have been crying since finding out at my 24 week scan that the placenta is still lying low.

Are there any positive stories out there where women have not needed a hysterectomy or where the placenta was low without accreta?

This is my 2nd pregnancy.

How far along are you? I was told in 95% it moves/is not ingrown. So chances are that you will be fine. However, I didn't believe this and was convinced I had it as I was also quiet soar around my section scar. Luckily i was recently given the all clear.

I had undiagnosed placenta accreta which was discovered after birth. While it was a different scenario as it was emergency, they did a manual removal and I was able to keep my womb. So so glad for you it has been potentially diagnosed early so you can get the care.

@Sunshine085 hiya, I am 24 weeks along, I don’t actually have any other symptoms, but so scared. Hoping that it does move positions.

@dreamersdown you were lucky to be able to keep your womb. I am hoping my placenta changes position and that it hasn’t actually implanted to the scar. My scan at the specialist clinic has been arranged for after 2 weeks.

My placenta was low and anterior, covering my CS scar at 20 weeks. I was referred for a scan with a consultant radiographer at my local hospital still. They couldn't rule out accreta so I was referred to a foetal medicine specialist at the university hospital. He did an abdominal and transvaginal scan and was able to rule out placenta accreta with absolute certainty. At that point, a vaginal delivery was back on the cards. I ended up having another ELCS as my boys don't seem to grasp that they need to have their head down... Absolutely no accreta whatsoever! Please remember it is extremely rare, even if you do have an anterior and low lying placenta over a section scar! All the best!

I am in fact extremely lucky to be alive. I won’t go into how serious it can be. It’s great it has been diagnosed so you don’t have the same emergency situation.

@Cantseethewindows hi, thank you so much for your response, this is so reassuring to read. I was told that if they can’t rule out accreta with the ultrasound or vaginal scans then they will arrange for an MRI. Praying that everything will turn out fine.

@MrsJdot you have still a good few weeks for the placenta to move. I was told that most times it moves by 32weeks. But as @Cantseethewindows said even if it stays low lying chances are high that it isnt acctrea. Best of luck!

@dreamersdown wow, that is scary but what an amazing outcome!!!

Glad it's helpful! I vaguely recall something about MRI Vs scans but can't remember. FWIW, the consultant radiographer at my local hospital turned out to have been very overly cautious - the foetal medicine specialist struggled to see what she'd interpreted as potential accreta. Not a fun time for me, but the relief later on was incredible! Wishing you all the best!!!

Hi.. hope you’re ok..have you had your baby? Did you have placenta accreta?? If so, how did surgery go?

@Brokenpearl hiya, due to gestational diabetes I have monthly scans, at my last scan I was told that the placenta is no longer anywhere near the cervix/scar site. I have not had my baby yet, still got a few weeks left. Hopefully everything goes will. It will be a c section regardless as I had my last baby via emergency c section just about 1 year ago.

That is very good to hear that the placenta is now in a better position. Sorry to hear of the G.D. Atleast however, thats not as dangerous as placenta accreta. Did you recover well after 1st c section? I’ve had 1 c/s (I also had G.D during that pregnancy) and Im scared to plan snother baby due to fear of placenta accreta. But Im 35 so i dont have much time to continue to be undecided but i see it as a life-death situation so sooo scared to plan another. Good luck with rest of pregnancy.

I’ve just given birth to my baby girl (2nd pregnancy) and had placenta accreta/increta and previa. Whilst I was prepared for major blood loss and hysterectomy, my c section & surgery at St Thomas’s hospital (under Dr Lawrence Mascarenhas) could not have gone better. I ended up with minimal blood loss, my uterus was saved (10% was removed where the accreta was deepest), and my baby girl and I are healthy and recovered (we were discharged at day 3!).

It was such a success I think because it was picked up early at week 20 and the Accreta team at Guys & St Thomas’s are just amazing.
