Loratadine during pregnancy

Anyone has experienced using Loratadine during pregnancy. I have massive allergy from pollen/dust/mold and have been taking a pill every single day. GP suggests its okay to carry on but I also know the manufacturers suggest against it. But I get bad cough if I dont pop a pill - Has anyone had experience with taking antihistamine every day of pregnancy? I am worried if this will harm pregnancy or the baby in any way at all.

They can’t test on pregnant ladies for obvious reasons so they can’t say it’s totally safe but I had the same discussion with my GP about loratadine and he also said it’s as safe as they deem an antihistamine to be in pregnancy. I’ve been taking it as my allergies just got too much and am now 28 weeks. All fine so far.

Following this as I take one cetirizine tablet every day too!

I dropped the tablets and just used nasal sprays which are permitted and actually much more effective. Years later I still take that religiously but rarely bother with tablets.

Totally fine for me. My 3.5 year old has had no adverse effects from me taking Loratadine through pregnancy. I intend to take it through the next one too.

I took loratadine throughout my pregnancy because it helped with my nausea. 8 week old DD has shown no ill effects from it 😊

I take it every day for inflammation issues and was told it was safe. Had it all through my pregnancy no issues

Thank you to those who have posted with their positive experiences. I’m really struggling with hayfever and haven’t psyched up to take it yet as I hate taking anything in pregnancy but you guys have been reassuring x

I took it though my whole pregnancy with dd. I'll be taking it again if I need to with this pregnancy.

I took it sometimes during my pregnancy and now still take it breastfeeding and DD is fine. But I second the poster above who mentioned nasal sprays - that's now my go to and I save the tablets for the worst days!

I had this issue, I usually get prescribed stronger antihistamines but was told I couldn't take them pregnant. Doctor and midwife recommended avoiding taking for first 12 weeks if possible, but that 'safest' was piriton. There's a website called 'bumps medicine' that has lists of lots of medications and whether you can take. Pharmacist was not very nice when I bought the piriton and told me none of it's safe and how I should stick it out 'for my baby'. Midwife and doctor weren't impressed and said high cortisol from the allergies could well be more harmful than the meds which have no proven safety concerns, especially if the hayfever/ allergy is bad. It's a balancing act 🤷‍♀️.

Various doctors including consultants have told me I can take Loratadine safely in pregnant. It’s an older antihistamine apparently which has a bit more research I think. The difficulty is that pregnant women aren’t tested on for obvious ethical reasons which is why docs have more reservations about other newer meds.

Just continue to consult your doc before starting anything. Hope the above helps put your mind at rest if your allergy symptoms are unbearable. I was told that breathing difficulties caused by my asthma if it deteriorated would be worse for my pregnancy and that it was best to take safe preventative meds instead. I didn’t need to in the end but I was on other meds.

Thanks every so much. its reassuring for sure. I tried doing just with nasal spray - but started having super bad cough. So have started again on tabs and its getting better.
