Could I have damaged baby’s hearing? 26 weeks…

Hello,

absolutely kicking myself and very annoyed at
my stupidity.

I am just sitting at my desk listening to some classical music music with headphones on and the baby started kicking. I wondered if it would be nice for him to hear some too so I put my headphones against my belly for about 30 or so seconds, possibly longer. Have no idea of the decibels.

When I had a quick check to see if this ok apparently it is a no-no. Such a fucking idiot. It’s bad for the baby and his hearing (surprise surprise, why didn’t I think it through!) as the sound amplifies as it travels through the amniotic fluid, according to BabyCenter.

I haven’t damaged his delicate hearing have I? Can anyone reassure me I’m overacting and being an idiot? Please!!

Thank you all!

Ah don’t stress your baby will be fine

Mummyboy1 · 23/04/2023 19:49

Hmm I think it's fine?! It sounds like a nice thing to do.

GoldenStrawberry · 23/04/2023 19:49

@oxborn thanks! I’m very sleep deprived at the moment, insomnia, so can’t really think straight tbh! x

When DS turned breach I was told to play some music for him to turn around to try and hear better! He definitely has perfect hearing, just is selective on when he wants to listen to me.. baby will be fine!

Ah OP 😀 this made me smile wryly - of course you'll worry about things like this but honestly, your baby & their hearing will be 💯 fine!

GoldenStrawberry · 23/04/2023 20:02

@Stressedoutforever 😊

My mother played Mozart and Beethoven to me and my siblings in a similar way. Didn't make any of us prodigies but we all have excellent hearing!

Thank you @sleepymama3! I thought it was a normal thing people do but then realised I should check as headphone technology is pretty good these days….

OP I went to a Rammstein concert whilst pregnant with my last... That's as loud as you can get and nothing wrong with baby's hearing. They're very protected in there.

QuinkWashable · 23/04/2023 20:23

They're pretty muffled in there - I mean, if you just put your head under the water in the bath it's hard to hear stuff going on outside, now make that bath a couple of layers of muscle, skin, and blood rushing around, the headphones barely stand a chance of being heard through/above it all!

PickledScrump · 23/04/2023 21:22

I ran a pub when pregnant with my second and had a lot of very loud live music. I swear she can hear someone rattle a packet from a mile away. Perfect hearing. Everything gets very muffled in there. Try lying in a bath of water and seeing how things sound.

In our antenatal classes with DD there was a mum who played the drums and her mum rather pointedly asked the midwives if her continuing to play through pregnancy could harm the baby. She was shot down and told if it chills the mum out and helps them relax then it’s actually a good thing!

Thanks for your replies all - I really appreciate it!

Had me in a bit of a tizz before

xx

It was a thing 25 years ago or so to play unborn babies Mozart. It's fine - I went to night clubs and gigs pregnant, dd is a musician!
