Gender of miscarried baby

Hey,

I think I know the answer to this but I just need to know for sure. I have a scan of my baby at 10 weeks 5 days, I then found out at 13 weeks 2 days that I had a missed miscarriage. Went on to miscarry the baby at 14 weeks.

It's always been on my mind if the baby was a boy or girl, I know it doesn't matter but I still feel so connected and want to be able to say he or she rather than baby.

Is it possible in anyway at all to tell from a scan picture that early?

Thank you all so much, you have all responded so kindly it honestly means so much ♥️ I'm so sorry for all of you who have experienced this too, I never would have imagined having to say goodbye to my child.

Really sorry for your loss @Ttcmumma

It's not possible to tell from the visual shape at that stage of development. Both sexes start identical and the different chromosomes get "switched on" when the time is right and one or other set of structures develop.

If you really need to know it would have to be via a chromosome analysis. Was any tissue kept that could be analysed? If you were treated at a hospital connected to a university they might have asked you for permission to keep some samples of tissue if they are doing any kind of large scale project on factors influencing miscarriage, and it could even be that a chromosome test would be a normal part of that research. But that might be unlikely.

@CoozudBoyuPuak unfortunately no, I was booked in for surgery to remove the pregnancy and also so they could test it for me but then it passed at home naturally. It was so sudden and traumatic I didn't think to 'catch' any of it. I did keep an eye out for the actual baby, like really tried to look out for the baby and was convinced s/he hadn't come out yet but when they scanned they had. So I must have flushed the baby without knowing 😔. I'm guessing the baby broke apart before coming out, as horrid as that is, because honestly I really investigated and nothing look like an actual baby.

I had my bloods done around the time the baby died, as part of my usual booking appointment. In fact it may have been the day the baby died. I never got those results back for anything as they just cancelled all appointments once I miscarried. They wouldn't have had that on record would they?

I'm very sorry for your loss. It is possible for doctors to tell from scans at this gestation, they do it all the time in Europe. It's hard from one picture but the angle of the nub looks to me like a boy. I have had many friends who were more or less sick with their second and were convinced it was a different sex to their first only to have the same sex baby again. However, since no one can be sure, why don't you just decide which sex brings you most comfort and honour your baby how you want to x

Based on the nub, it's a boy.
Sorry for your loss ❤️
